Catarina Laranjeiro is a CEEC (Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus) junior researcher at the Instituto de História Contemporânea (IHC, NOVA-FCSH) with the project "African Modes of Self-Filming: Popular Films in Transnational Flow" (2020.00202.CEECIND). She works on vernacular cinema, particularly in Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and their diasporas communities in Portugal. At the IHC, she co-heads the Research Line 'Modern Mediations: Arts, Technology & Communication', and she integrated the research project "Amilcar Cabral, from Political History to the Politics of Memory" (PTDC/EPH-HIS/6964/5214). She holds a Ph.D. in Post-Colonialism and Global Citizenship from the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra. Following a transdisciplinary academic path, she holds a degree in Social Psychology from the University of Lisbon and a Master of Media and Visual Anthropology from Freie Universitaet Berlin. She was the editor of the "Exhibitions and Film Festivals" section and a member of the editorial board at Aniki: Portuguese Journal of the Moving Image. She has published one peer-reviewed book, seven peer-reviewed articles (3 in SCOPUS/Web of Science journals, and seven book chapters. As a filmmaker, she directed the film "Pabia di Aos" (2013) and co-directed "Fire in the Mud" (2022). She has participated in several projects that interlace anthropology, cinema, and visual arts. Her main research interests focus on colonial and postcolonial cinema, vernacular cinema, home movies, memory politics, and gender studies.
