Ana Catarina Almeida Santos

Ana Catarina Almeida Santos is, currently, a PhD student in Biotechnology at the University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal, working on the production of Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) filters functionalized with Immunoglobulin Y (IgY) antibodies to decrease the virus spreading and cross-contamination. She finished her BSc and MSc degrees in Biochemistry at the same institution in 2017 and 2019, respectively. During her MSc, Catarina had the opportunity to deal with more sustainable and low-cost production and purification techniques by working within biomass valorisation and with deep eutectic solvents, to prepare a graphene-based material, foreseeing its use to remove purines from beverages. She carried out research voluntary work at CICECO- Aveiro Institute of Materials of UA to finish the work developed under her MsC. Catarina Almeida participated in the entrepreneurship programs HiTech 2021 and HiEngine with PurifY, a team specialized in material functionalization. PurifY was highlighted in Expresso, one of the leading newspapers in Portugal. Catarina Almeida was part of the team of the European Research Council (ERC) Proof of Concept (PoC) with the project PureIgY, which focused on the scale-up of a developed purification process for antibodies, and the evaluation of the activity, stability, and toxicity of the obtained antibodies. She had also a scholarship within the project Yscript: Yeast cell factory for mRNA bioproduction project, reference 101047214, financed by Horizon 2020. Currently, she owns an FCT PhD scholarship 2022.11570.BD to develop her PhD work. She was also part of the CICECO PhD Students Commission, in which she had the opportunity to organize events of scientific relevance and to straighten the network with the academic community. Her scientific research has already allowed the publication of 4 scientific manuscripts, the presentation of 16 posters, and 5 oral communications at national/international conferences. Also, Catarina has several manuscripts submitted, and more under preparation. She has also supervised the experimental work of 1 MSc and 2 BSc students with backgrounds in Biology and Biotechnology, respectively, as well as undergraduate volunteer students with backgrounds in Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering, and 1 BSc volunteer student with a background in Biotechnology.
