I am a Physicist working in the field of Vis-NIR Spectroscopy and Deep Learning, with an emphasis on data science and numerical modelling of spectroscopic data for analytical chemistry / chemometric tasks. I'm currently a researcher at CEOT (Center for Electronics, Optoelectronics and Telecommunications) of the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal. CEOT is a multidisciplinary research center that aggregates specialists in Physics, Computer Science, Biology and Agronomy with the goals of developing practical applications in the fields of biological sensing technologies, remote sensing, precision agriculture and telecommunication networks. I'm interested in studying the problem of light propagation in turbid media, how scattering and absorption affects this propagation and what information can we infer from that light-medium interaction. For that end, I'm working in the development of experimental NIR spectroscopic technologies (Optics) and I'm also focused in using modern deep learning algorithms to improve spectral data analysis and chemometric tasks (Analytical Chemistry). I'm fascinated by the area of machine learning and by incremental practice I've become better at the subject. The fusion between theoretical physical models of light propagation in media with deep learning models is challenging, novel and potentially revolutionary, I'm also working in the implementation of experimental networks of sensors and exploring different types of communication technologies in the field of IoT applied to precision agriculture. These multidisciplinary projects involve the interaction of a very broad scope of areas and skills, including team building, management and student supervision. I've a degree in Physics Engineering (2003) from the University of Algarve and a PhD in Physics (Astrophysics) by the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon in 2010. After graduation, in 2004, I was a research fellow for 2 year in non-linear Optics with applications to Medical Physics and biological tissues. After a short period working in the private IT sector, in 2007 I started my PhD in the area of Physics/Astrophysics at IST Lisbon (finished 2010). After that I was a post-doc fellow in three institutions: Univ. Evora and IST-Lisbon (in Portugal) and in the Univ. Montreal (in Canada) from 2011 to 2017 in the area of Solar Physics doing research about the evolution of the solar magnetic field and solar dynamo theory. During this period I developed a novel theoretical framework for the study of solar large scale magnetic fields (low order dynamo model), implemented complex 3D MHD simulations of solar convection, participated in other types of numerical simulations through multiple scientific collaborations and was an invited professor for Astrophysics at IST-Lisbon. I also worked in models for long term prediction of solar activity and its connection to Space Climate (Sun-Earth magnetic interaction). During that period I developed my data analysis skills and increased my computational resourcefulness through international research collaborations (Canada, USA, India, Finland, UK and Germany). My background in Solar Physics provided precious experience and skills that allowed me to adapt to new research areas and face new professional challenges. I'm very grateful to all my "solar" colleagues that contributed to that growth as a researcher. During the years I've also actively integrated the LOC and SOC of many national and international scientific meetings/workshops and I regularly engage in public outreach activities in the areas of Physics, Astrophysics and Computer Sciences by giving talks, writing articles and crafting scientific illustrations.
