Currently, Artur Neves is the David Booth Fellow in conservation science working in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, USA. He has a PhD in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage granted in 2023 by the Department of Conservation and Restoration of NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon, Portugal. His PhD is focused on the study and preservation of celluloid objects. In 2020 and 2021, he was awarded two projects in the DISCO beamline of the SOLEIL Synchrotron, France, to test deep UV luminescence for the study of celluloid degradation. In 2020 he received a research fellowship within the NEMOSINE European project to study the degradation of cellulose derivative cinematographic films. Between January and May 2022, Artur Neves was granted a Fulbright research fellowship with the support of the FCT. Hosted by the Department of History of the University of Maryland, he worked with American institutions for the multinalytical study of celluloid objects, including the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. In 2022, he was also awarded a project by IPERION HS at IPANEMA, France, for the testing of state-of-the-art imaging techniques in the study of celluloid degradation mechanisms. In 2023, he was a researcher of the project “REDiscovering madder colours: Science & Art for the preservation and creation of cultural heritage” to investigate the photostability of madder reds. In 2024, he was a postdoctoral research fellow in the project “Plastics Metamarphoses: reality and multiple approaches to a material” working on plastics material culture in Portugal.
