Pedro Mateus graduated in Technological Chemistry from the Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) in 2004. After that he worked on the industry, until in 2006 he joined Prof. Delgado¿s group at Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA). The next year he was awarded a grant to pursue PhD studies in the same lab, which he concluded in 2011. During his PhD he studied the recognition of anions by polyamine macrobicyclic receptors and acquired expertise in the synthesis of three-dimensional molecular architectures and in the determination of thermodynamic binding parameters in molecular recognition events by several techniques (potentiometry, UV-vis, fluorescence, circular dichroism, NMR, ITC). After finishing his PhD, was awarded with a grant from FCT in early 2012 to pursue post-doctoral studies in Prof. Rita Delgado's laboratory in ITQB. During that period he worked with macrocyclic and macrobicyclic complexes for the recognition of carboxylates, amino acids and phosphorylated molecules of biological interest. In late 2015, he joined the group of Prof. Ivan Huc as a postdoc in the Institut Européen de Chimie et Biologie (IECB), in Bordeaux, France, to work on aromatic oligoamide-based artificial beta-sheet foldamers. Soon after, in early 2016, was awarded a research fellowship under the prestigious European Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions - Individual Fellowship Program (2015 call; success rate: 14.2%), to work in the same group on aryl amide metallofoldamers for saccharide recognition. During this period, he received the most advanced training possible in the foldamer field and established a firm set of skills including heterocyclic chemistry, multistep synthesis and purification of large oligomers as well as structural characterization by NMR and X-ray analysis. In January 2019, he returned to Portugal and started working with Dr. Nuno Basílio in Laboratório Associado para a Química Verde (LAQV), in the scope of a project concerning photoresponsive self-assembled nanomaterials for drug and gene delivery, where he added photochemistry and colloid chemistry to his toolbox. In late 2021 he secured an Auxiliary Researcher position at the ITQB NOVA, in the highly competive Concurso Estímulo ao Emprego Científico Individual - 4.ª Edição, and since May 2022 he heads the Bio-oriented Supramolecular Chemistry lab. Throughout his career path, published 30 articles in peer-reviewed international journals (17 as 1st author, 6 as corresponding author) which have accumulated 634 citations, yielding a H-index of 16. He presented his results in national and international conferences, seminars and workshops with 17 oral and 23 poster communications and has received 1 award of best flash presentation. He participated as Principal Investigator in 1 project, as Researcher in 3 projects, and as Research Fellow in 1 project. He was involved in the mentoring/tutoring of 14 younger researchers and co-supervised 1 MSc dissertation.
