Ana I. Matos (AIM) is currently a Junior Researcher at BioNanoSciences-Drug Delivery & Immunoengineering lab led by Prof. Helena Florindo at iMed.ULisboa (Research Institute for Medicines, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon). Over the last decade, AIM's work has provided significant advances to immunotherapeutic approaches against cancer. AIM participates in national and international research projects covering multiple areas, such as the development of novel therapeutic vaccines and targeted immune modulatory and checkpoint therapies, where the nanotechnology, immune delivery, cancer immunology and immunotherapy research fields were bridged to develop combinatorial approaches against melanoma, colorectal, pancreatic and breast cancers. AIM's expertise has been an additional value to take advantage of novel functionalized nanomedicines to deliver combinations of bioactive molecules targeting distinct cell populations, namely dendritic cells (DC), and immune, tumor or stromal cells within the tumor microenvironment, to overcome immunosuppressive and evasion mechanisms and thereby control metastasis and disease recurrence. AIM earned her PhD in 2020 in Biomedical Engineering (TÉCNICO LISBOA). During her PhD studies she engineered a nanotechnology-based immunotherapy to re-educate host immunity against solid tumors. She demonstrated the synergism between this nano-immunotherapy, the checkpoint inhibitor anti-PD-1 and the polarization of macrophages into the pro-inflammatory phenotype, in colorectal cancer and melanoma mouse models. This project resulted in 2 first-author publications in a high impact journals, 2 oral presentations and 11 posters. From 2020 to 2023, AIM secured a Post-Doctoral position in “la Caixa”-funded international consortium (NanoPanther, LCF/PR/HR19/52160021, 1M€) designing nano-based tools as potential immunotherapies against pancreatic cancer, involving iMed.ULisboa (Lisboa, Portugal), Prince Felipe Research Center (Valencia, Spain) and Tel Aviv University (TAU) (Tel Aviv, Israel). In 2023, AIM embraced as a Junior Researcher an innovative project to develop translational nanotechnology-based immunotherapy to re-educate host immune response against breast brain metastases (LCF/PR/HR22/52420016, 1M€). AIM also participated in additional projects, such as those awarded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) focused on the development of new immunotherapies against metastatic melanoma (NanoMetBrain, PTDC/BTM-SAL/4350/2021) and breast (NxGNanoTher, UTAP-EXPL/NPN/0041/2021) cancers, being the later awarded within the University of Texas at Austin-Portugal program. AIM is also actively sharing her research outputs with scientific community and other stakeholders (patients, clinicians, biotech, pharma, public) via media and scientific conferences. Over these years, AIM participated in the writing of scientific projects submitted for national and international funding and in several collaborations that resulted in review and original manuscripts published in high-impact journals (ORCID: 0000-0002-7325-6328), such as Advanced Science, Advanced Functional Materials, and Nature Nanotechnology. AIM interacted with more than 40 authors (+7 nationalities), publishing in total 19 articles and 4 conference proceedings with an H-index of 10, a cumulative Cite Score 2023 of 324 and a total of 901 citations (Scopus). Her findings were presented at several national and international meetings (21 oral communications and 46 posters). She was supported by 5 travel grants and 5 registration awards from renowned scientific societies to participate in highly recognized international meetings, including EACR, CIMT and CRS. AIM had been part of the team of 5 FCT-funded projects, and 4 international consortiums. AIM has actively mentored national and international PhD/MSc/BSc students, fostering next-generation scientists while managing laboratory and project tasks.
