Maria Alexandra de Oliveira Silva Braga Pedreira de Brito is graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1984) by the Faculty of Pharmacy (FF), University of Lisbon (UL), and has a PhD in Biochemistry (2001) and Habilitation (Aggregation) in Cellular and Molecular Biology (2012) by the UL. Maria Alexandra Brito is Associate Professor at the FFUL, vice-President of the Scientific Council, member of the Scientific Council of the Master in Biopharmaceutical Sciences, and coordinator of the PhD in Pharmacy of the FFUL. She teaches several units of the Integrated Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Master in Biopharmaceutical Sciences, Master in Clinical Analysis, and PhD in Pharmacy. Moreover, she contributes to the Integrated Master Biomedical and Biophysical Engineering at the Faculty of Sciences and to the Master in Neurosciences of the Faculty of Medicine, at the UL, and PhD courses at Universidade de Coimbra and Universidade do Minho. Her research activity is developed at the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa) at FFUL, where she coordinates the Neurovascular Lab. Her group is focused in Neuropathology, particularly in brain tumors, aiming at understanding disease mechanisms to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets, and discover drug candidates for their modulation in order to prevent or treat the pathological condition. The studies are centered in the blood-brain barrier (BBB) as a player in disease pathogenesis, as a source of biomarkers and as an obstacle to transpose for therapeutic purposes. The Lab has established in vitro models of increasing complexity, including cultures of BBB endothelial cells in conditions mimicking physiological shear stress, as well as mixed cultures and co-cultures with other cell types to replicate BBB physiological properties and pathological conditions like primary and metastatic tumors. Moreover, in vivo studies are performed in appropriate disease models. The Lab has well established methodological approaches for analyses at cellular and molecular levels, including intercellular interactions and release of biomarkers. These include histological, immunocytochemical, and immunohistochemical techniques, RT-PCR, flow cytometry, nanoparticles tracking analysis, automated fluorescence microscopy and live-cell imaging, among others. Moreover, it uses bioinformatics tools to unravel novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Maria Alexandra Brito has coordinated and participated in several projects with competitive funding, by institutions like FCT and Pfizer. Besides institutional and national collaborations, she has relevant international partnerships, which attest her internationalization. Her work is translated into publication of 14 book chapters, 78 articles in peer reviewed journals, and more than 260 abstracts in scientific journals or proceedings of scientific meetings, corresponding to an H index of 34. She has supervised several Post-Doc, PhD, master and undergraduate students. The merit of her research is attested by several national and international awards and by the invitation to participate in national and international meetings as an invited speaker and moderator. She has been engaged in outreach activities, ranging from the “Ciência Viva” program to the organization of national and international conferences, scientific meetings and courses. Moreover, Professor Brito has been invited to participate in the evaluation process of grants and projects by several national (e.g., FCT) and international (e.g., European Commission) programs like Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, Innovative Medicines Initiative, Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) OPEN and European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder.
