Prof. Carlos Guedes Soares is a Distinguished Professor of Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. He received the MSc. and the Ocean Engineer degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA in 1976, the Ph.D. degree from the Norwegian Institute of Technology of the University of Trondheim, in 1984, and the Doctor of Science degree (Agregação) from the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 1991. After earning his PhD, he has been at the University of Lisbon (formerly the Technical University of Lisbon until 2013). He created the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) in 1994, a research centre of Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. He was its President until 2020 and its Scientific Coordinator since then. He has supervised about 100 Master's students and 75 PhD students in IST, and co-supervised about 50 foreign PhD students. He also supervised about 60 post-doctoral researchers and young professors. In recognition of his international collaboration and the advanced training of researchers from Eastern Europe, he received the titles of Honorary Professor from the Technical University of Varna, Bulgaria (October 2003), and Doctor Honoris Causa from the University "Dunarea de Jos", Galati, Romania (May 2004). In 2018, he was elected a member of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering, in 2025, he was elected an international member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and in 2026, he was elected a member of the European Academy of Sciences. He received the Scientific Prize UTL / Santander Totta 2007 and the Scientific Prize ULisboa / Santander Universidades 2016 (the first time the award could be considered after obtaining it in 2007). As International Awards, he received the SOBENA International Award 2010, from the Brazilian Association of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the CEMT Award 2012, from the Confederation of European Maritime Technology Societies, the Career Award 2017 given by the Ibero-Latin American Federation of Mechanical Engineering, the ASME Lifetime Achievement Award 2018, the China Friendship Award 2024, and the ESRA Safety and Reliability Achievement Award 2025. He is a Fellow of SNAME, RINA, IMarEST and ASME, "Membro Conselheiro" of Ordem dos Engenheiros, and Member of ASCE, AGU, AMS and SRA. During his career, he has co-authored over 1,200 journal papers indexed in Web of Science (16 of which are highly cited in 2026), which have received about 50,000 citations (70,000 in Scopus and 89,000 in Google Scholar). The papers cover the areas of Marine Environment (240); Dynamics and Hydrodynamics (425); Marine Structures (350); Safety, and Reliability (250). He has also edited 27 books. In the Stanford World Ranking of the 2% Highly Cited Scientists, for career citations, he was first among all Portuguese scientists from all scientific areas every year from 2020 to 2025. Worldwide, he was ranked in Civil Engineering, which includes Marine and Ocean Engineering. In 2020, he ranked second; in 2021, he ranked first; in 2022, he ranked fourth; in 2023, first again; and in 2024 and 2025, second (out of 62,565 authors). He was Editor for about 20 years and Editor-in-Chief for the following 10 years (until 2020) of the Reliability Engineering and Systems Safety Journal (Elsevier), the top journal in the field. He is currently Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Marine Science and Application (Springer), the Journal of Reliability Science and Engineering (IOP Press) and the Autonomous Transportation Research Journal (Elsevier). He has been on the Editorial Board of more than 20 Journals. He has been Chair or Co-Chair of various conferences in the OMAE, ESREL, IMAM, MARSTRUCT, MARTECH, ICCGS, and RENEW series. He is the Chairman of WEGEMT, the European Association of (40) Universities in Marine Technology, since 2023.
