Trypanosoma brucei (T. brucei) is a protozoan unicellular parasite that causes lethal diseases in sub-Saharan Africa: sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in cattle. The veterinary disease has a devastating impact on socioeconomic development and animal welfare in Africa and South America. To maintain a chronic infection, T. brucei employs a variety of sophisticated mechanisms that allow parasites to escape the host immune system and to be best adapted to the host environment (1). My laboratory has used molecular, genetic and cellular approaches to study some of these mechanisms, including tissue tropism (2-6), circadian rhythm (7, 8) and gene regulation (9,10). In the last 5 years, my laboratory has been exclusively funded by competitive grants. In particular from Howard Hughes Medical Institute (International program, 2012-2018, 750kUSD), European Research Council (consolidator grant, 2018-2022, 2M¿) and La Caixa Foundation (2021-2023, 500k¿). I also participate in two network grants from Wellcome Trust Collaborative program (Cobalt, 2018-2021) and International Training Network PhD program (Cell2cell, 2020-2024). 1. 2021/05/12 - 2021/05/14 Self-leadership is the process by which a person becomes more comfortable with who they are and what they want, allowing them to fulfill their potential and build a strong foundation from which to take daily decisions – both professional and personal. Self-leadership enables better communication, satisfaction and more-balanced decisions. In the world of scientific research, both men and women can benefit from learning and practicing self-leadership to improve their professional and personal lives.
Workshop
EMBO Self-Leadership Workshop – Online Course
European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Germany
2021/01/08 - 2021/01/09 The VIRT2UE Train the Trainer program addresses researchers and educators from different disciplines who want to become trainers in Research Integrity. The training takes a virtue-based approach and supports participants in reflecting on their understanding of, and own positions towards research integrity. In line with this, a strong focus is put on fostering reflecting on personal cases and experiences with the intention of building strong connections between theory and practice.
Workshop
Research INtegrity Virt2UE
European Commission, Belgium
2014/10/06 - 2014/10/09 The aim is to explore with attendees their own approach to leadership – and the approaches of the other participants - and use this insight to define for each individual how they want to lead and manage their research groups or other teams. The course also provides insight into how teams work best together and how to identify and resolve barriers to the efficient operation of teams. Throughout the course, the trainers provide tools, techniques and insight tailored specifically to the laboratory/research setting for the management of teams.
