Pedro Marcelino is currently a PhD student in Bioengineering at Instituto Superior Técnico - Universidade de Lisboa (IST-UL), focusing on the development of gradient conductive scaffolds and multi-stimuli bioreactor devices to apply in the context of osteochondral tissue engineering. He holds a Master's degree in Biological Engineering with a thesis also from IST-UL, completed in 2021, on the subjects of characterizing novel electroconductive coatings and design and manufacturing of curvature-mimicking scaffolds in the context of osteochondral tissue engineering (thesis grade 18/20). During the thesis, this work was selected for an oral presentation at an international conference and accepted for publication as a paper in a proceedings journal. With the motivation and interest of increasing his knowledge in biomaterials, biofabrication and mathematical modeling, he applied and was awarded a research scholarship, from CDRSP-Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development from Polytechnic of Leiria, on mathematical numerical simulation of the mechanical behavior of the scaffolds through finite element analysis, under the scope of the FCT funded project "OptiBioscaffold - Optimização de estímulos em scaffolds bi-tecido: da modelação matemática e computacional à validação experimental", in which he is still currently actively working. Outputs of this work have been presented in oral or poster presentations and have resulted in the publication of a proceedings and of a research paper. Additive manufacturing is one of his main interests together with modeling. Prior to completing his Master's, he enthusiastically worked in science communication and dissemination for over five years at the Lagos Ciência Viva Science Centre. In that role, beyond the regular scientific outreach activities, he also authored a number of activities and projects focusing on the remarkable applications of 3D printing technology, targeting primary/secondary school age children as well as the general public. Among other skills acquired in the course of his professional life, the knowledge and practice in molecular biology gained at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering in Ghent (Belgium) during an Erasmus program internship and knowledge in programming and electronics are a testament of his multidisciplinary interests.
