Carlos Alberto Antunes Viegas was born in Mozambique (Portugal) on December 6, 1967. He graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Lisbon in 1991 and obtained a master’s degree in animal Experimentation from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra in 1997. In 2004 he obtained his European Doctorate in Veterinary Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) with work carried out in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Vienna (Austria); in 2005 the title of Specialist in Dentistry and Veterinary Maxillofacial Surgery from the same institution and in 2012 the Habilitation title from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD). Accredited since December 10, 2009, as a competent person (Researcher – Coordinator) for the practice of animal experimentation, by the General Veterinary Directorate under point iii), subparagraph e), no. 3 of Ordinance no. 1005/92, October 23rd. Carlos Viegas is an active member of several scientific organizations such as the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society – European Chapter (TERMIS-EU), the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapies (SPCE-TC) and the European Veterinary Dentistry Society (EVDS). He is also a founding member and the present President of the Portuguese Society of Veterinary and Experimental Dentistry. Carlos Viegas has also been involved in the preparation of research projects proposals submitted to national and European entities, as well as in the organization of national and international scientific meetings. He published 82 articles in specialized magazines and 90 works in event proceedings, with 8 book chapters published. He supervised 6 doctoral theses, 53 master's dissertations, in addition to having supervised 46 course conclusion works. He has received 50 awards and/or honors. In his professional activities, he interacted with 199 collaborators in co-authoring scientific works. He edited 25 publications, as editor of 3 indexed publications. He reviewed 335 indexed articles, with 45 of these reviews being considered excellent. He won two important national research awards in the field of veterinary and human medicine. Pfizer Clinical Research Prize 2007, awarded by the Society of Medical Sciences of Lisbon." Evaluation of biochemical markers of bone formation and their correlation with serum minerals in the process of bone healing in osteotomies and bone defects of critical dimension to the tibia level in sheep as an experimental research in orthopedics.." Pfizer Award - Veterinary Science in 2005, awarded by the Portuguese Society of Veterinary Science. "The use of platelet-rich plasma in the regeneration of the alveolar bone and the cortical tissue. Experimental studies in a periodontal bone defect model in Beagle dog (Canis familiaris) and a cortical bone defect model in sheep (Ovies aries)." At the present he is Director of the 3rd Cycle Course on Veterinary Sciences from the School of Agrarian and Veterinarian Sciences (ECAV) – UTAD. Currently, he is an Associated Professor with Habilitation at the Department of Veterinary Sciences of the School of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences (ECAV) and, since 2021, Associated Member of the Animal and Veterinary Research Center (CECAV-UTAD).. He teaches subjects concerning Small Animal Internal Medicine, Dentistry and Professional Ethics from the Veterinary Medicine Integrated master’s degree. For the past 30 years he develops research work related with oral diseases namely in the fields of clinical genomics and regenerative medicine (biomaterials and cellular therapies).
