António Marques is senior researcher at IPMA and is member of CIIMAR. AM graduated at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (PT) in 1999 and completed the PhD in Applied Biological Sciences at Ghent University (BE) in 2005 . Afterwards, AM returned to Portugal, to carry out the post-doctoral activities on seafood quality, safety and physiology with one FCT (FRESHFISH: PCDT/DG/MAR/82008/2006), and two European (FP6 CRUSTASEA: 030421; FP7 LOBSTERPLANT: 222362) projects as principal investigator (PI). After receiving an FCT Ciência 2008 and IF2014 grants, AM continued working at IPMA in Portugal with a permanent position of senior researcher in the field of seafood quality, safety (chemical and microbiology), physiology, toxicology, consumer risk assessment, upgrading of seafood products, consumer perceptions and seafood preservation. This position did not contemplate any start-up budget, but AM was able to overcome this delay by getting several R&D projects with international partners (FP6, FP7, H2020, Horizon Europe and FCT funded as PI; see CV), including the coordination of four European projects: i) Horizon Europe INNOECOFOOD (5 million euros); ii) H2020 SEAFOODtomorrow (7 million euros); iii) ECsafeSEAFOOD (5.09 million euros); and iv) and FP6 RISKFOODCONT (210k euros). AM has authored 159 papers in top-ranked international peer review journals and 8 book chapters (h-index of 44), including Fish and Shellfish Immunology, Food Hydrocolloids, Food and Chemical Toxicology and Food Microbiology. AM also gave more than 100 oral and poster presentations at international conferences. Concomitantly, AM established his own team as an advisor and mentor (at IPMA DivAV; www.ipma.pt), now comprising 10 post-docs, 3 PhD and 2 technician. AM is also teacher at the Masters of Science in Gastronomy at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia of Lisbon University since 2005, the Masters of Science in Aquaculture at the Superior School of Tourism and Sea Technology in Peniche since 2023, and the Post Graduation of Marine Science, Technology and Society of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, New University of Lisboa (2022 and 2023). In the overall, AM has gathered as PI or coordinator ~20 million euros in R&D projects since 2006, and has completed the supervision of 13 post-doc, 10 PhD, 14 MSc and 27 project researchers and technicians. AM has been external evaluator of scientific projects in 10 International Funding Agencies, including the EC, EC Research Executive Agency and European Food Safety Authority. AM has also collaborated as reviewer in indexed and non-indexed peer review journals, including the top-ranked FEMS Microbial Ecology, Food & Chemical Toxicology, Microbial Ecology, and Journal of Agricultural & Food Chemistry. AM has established and continue to enlarge a strong and extensive research network, currently with collaborators in more than 20 Portuguese and 120 International R&D institutions (RTDs, SMEs and SMEs AGs) from European and non-European countries, including the US Food & Drug Administration and the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organizations.
