Margarida Matos is Full Professor at the Department of Animal Biology, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) and integrated member of the Research Unit Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (cE3c) of which she is Subdirector as well as Coordinator in the branch Evolutionary Biology since 2009. Throughout the years she has taught many disciplines in Bachelor and Master Courses at FCUL, particularly in the fields Evolutionary Biology, Experimental Evolution and Evolutionary Ecology. She coordinates the offer of Advanced Courses targeting PhD students of cE3c and FCUL. She was co-coordinator of the Master in Evolutionary and Developmental Biology (FCUL) (2020-2023) and she is the Coordinator at the University of Lisbon of the Doctoral Programme in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution (ULisboa, UPorto) (2023-...). She supervised 9 PhD theses (8 defended, one ongoing) and 4 Post-Docs. She has many long term collaborations in several research fields, such as evolution of life-histories with Michael R. Rose and thermal and clinal evolution with Mauro Santos, among others. She is member of the 'ESF Pool of peer reviewers', was Associate Editor of the journal Evolution (2017-2019) and Frontiers in Genetics (2019-...) and was a member of the editorial board of 'Journal of Genetics' (2008-2017). She refereed articles in many journals, e.g. Mol. Ecol.', 'Genetics Research', 'J. Evol. Biol.', 'Proc. Royal Soc. B', 'Evolution', 'Biological Invasions' etc. She participated in an ESF Research Network ThermAdapt (2006-2012) and in several national and international meetings organizations. She is a member of the scientific societies ESEB, SSE and APBE (Portuguese Soc. Evolution). Margarida Matos research uses Experimental evolution as tool and Drosophila subobscura as a model organism, to study the evolutionary patterns and processes during adaptation to novel environments. The main goals of ongoing projects is the analysis, at several biological levels, of the evolution of populations founded from contrasting latitudes, to understand the role of History and Selection during Adaptation (including Thermal Adaptation), the predictability of evolution, the genome-wide mechanisms underlying clinal variation of inversions. This is approached by analyzing real time evolution of repeated colonizations of Drosophila subobscura populations to a laboratorial environment. She has lead several projects financed by FCT, the more recent as Co-Principal Investigator ADAPTCLIMWARM FCT project (PI: Pedro Simões), whose main goal has been to understand the evolutionary potential and genetic basis of thermal adaptation. Her research has so far highlighted that populations have abundant standing genetic variation to adapt to novel environments, with selection quickly erasing the signs of history in fitness-related traits, while genetic differentiation between populations may be maintained. She has authored more than 80 scientific publications, including 2 books and more than 50 articles in journals of recognized merit in Evolutionary Biology.
