Maria João Nogueira Ferreira. Graduated in Biology by Faculty of Sciences of University of Porto in 2016 and completed the master’s degree in Functional Biology and Biotechnology of Plants in 2018, at the same university. Her main research focus is the study of Plants’ Reproduction in the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. With an on growing population, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms behind the formation of a mature seed and horizontally transfer that knowledge to the economically valuable agricultural crop species. During her academic career, she developed molecular-genetic skills important for the efficiently analysis of the reproductive processes as well as learned how to handle with several cell biology tools. In addition, as a SexSeed member, she had the opportunity to work closely with Dr Higashiyama (Japan) and Dr Haak (USA), two experts in the plants’ reproduction and Bioinformatics field, respectively. Furthermore, she presented her work in the 25th International Congress on Sexual Plant Reproduction (Japan) and had her first publication as co-author in 2019, with a review on the crosstalk between the pollen-pistil, necessary for the achievement of double fertilisation. Currently, she is a PhD student funded by a FCT fellowship, who wants to infer about a specific genetic network, acting on a structure called funiculus, which is affecting seed maturation.
