PT Marisa Almeida é investigadora principal do CIIMAR, tendo cerca de 150 publicações internacionais. Com um doutoramento em Química (obtido em 2003), a sua principal área de investigação é a bioremediação e fitorremediação, participando ativamente em estudos que visam potenciar a utilização destas ferramentas biotecnológicas como soluções baseadas na natureza para melhorar e recuperar ambientes aquáticos contaminados com diferentes poluentes. A sua especialidade é a química ambiental aplicada a ambientes costeiros e estuarinos e a bio e fitorremediação de contaminantes em zonas húmidas naturais e construídas participando em projectos científicos nacionais e internacionais nestes tópicos versando sobre diversos poluentes, nomeadamente metais, hidrocarbonetos de petróleo, fármacos e microplásticos e as suas interacções. Os seus projectos mais recentes versam sobre a utilização de zonas humidas naturais, os sapais, como soluções baseadas na natureza para a preservação e recuperação e ambientes aquáticos impactados. Dois outros dos seus mais recentes projectos versam sobre a temática do lixo marinho e microplásticos numa perspetiva de monitorização e prevenção destes, tendo sido co-autor de um capítulo de livro sobre esta temática no Tratado dos Estuários. Participa também ativamente em actividades de disseminação e comunicação e é atualmente professora convidada da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto. ENG Marisa Almeida (Female, born in 1974) is a senior researcher at CIIMAR since 2005, head of the team Environmental Chemistry and Recovery, with ca 150 international publications in peer review scientific journals and ca. 200 presentations (oral and poster) in international and national scientific meetings. With a PhD in Chemistry (obtained in 2003) her research area involves pollutants surveys/impacts and bio and phytoremediation, being actively engage in studies that aim to enhance the use of bio and phytoremediation as a tool of biotechnology for remediation of aquatic environments contaminated with different pollutants. Currently she is leading a project and participating in two other exploring the estuarine salt marsh as nature based solutions for pollutants removal. Her expertise is on environmental chemistry applied to coastal and estuarine environments and phytoremediation of contaminants in natural and constructed wetlands and contributes in studies on bioremediation of oil spills as well as on ecological risk assessment, coordinating and participating in several national and international projects on these topics. She is focusing on metals, hydrocarbons and emerging pollutants (e.g., pharmaceuticals, nanoparticles and microplastics) tracking in different environmental matrices (water, sediment and biota), having extensive know how in analytical chemistry and application of several analytical techniques. She has supervised or co-supervised 5 Pos Doc researchers, 18 PhD students (12 on going), 34 MSc students (1 on going) and internships of 8 international students as well as 30 Graduate students. Moreover she regularly gives talks to the general public and school students in the frame of the CIIMAR outreach programs and projects, regarding both ocean and water literacy, coordinating or participating on projects on this topic. She has also coordenated CMIA, a science dissemination center, between 2019 and 2021. She participates also in COST actions (2 conclude and 2 on-going), acts as project proposals evaluator, thesis evaluator and is an editor and invited reviewer of several scientific journals. At CIIMAR she is responsible for coordination of the Chemical Analytical Platform and of the Chemistry Lab.
