Ricardo Ramiro obtained a PhD in Evolutionary biology in 2012 from the University of Edinburgh (UK).  He has authored a total of 17 articles, 1 editorial, 2 reviews and 14 research papers in international peer-reviewed journals. Of these he has been the first author in 6, being the corresponding author in all of these. He has an h-index of 13, with an average of 39 citations per publication (Google Scholar, February 2023). He has been attributed 2 competitive fellowships, 2 competitive projects and collaborated in multiple projects as a team member. He has given 2 invited oral presentations, received 3 awards; peer-reviewed for 14 journals; taught 5 courses and co-organized 6 international research conferences.  Throughout his career, he has applied ecological and evolutionary approaches to understand host-microbe interactions. He has studied how the ecological context, both in vitro and in vivo, affects the adaptation and phenotypic strategies of malaria parasites (Plasmodium) and commensal bacteria (Escherichia coil). Throughout his career, he has generally used a multidisciplinary approach and worked at the interaction between experimental, bioinformatic and theoretical approaches. This has allowed him to acquire a diverse set of skills in statistics (eg. (generalized) linear mixed models); programming (R/bash) and bioinformatics. Over the past 8 years, Ricardo has focused on developing his skills in bioinformatics, which led to his recruitment as a post-doc within the ONEIDA project (in 2020), where he focused on microbiome analysis and comparative genomics. Currently, Ricardo is the director of the Data Management and Risk Analysis department at the InnovPlantProtect CoLab, where he coordinates a team of PhD and MSc researchers applying bioinformatics, machine learning and mathematical modelling to plant-pathogen interactions. His research interests lie in the host-pathogen and host-microbiome interactions, from the individual to the population scale. His main aim is to create knowledge and develop tools that can help increase agricultural productivity in concert with environmental sustainability.
