Cristina Azevedo, is highly experienced researcher with broad expertise. She started her research in the field of plant pathogen interactions having worked with rice, barley, tobacco and Arabidopsis to study molecular mechanisms of plant resistance against pathogenic fungus and bacteria. She then used several model systems (Bacteria, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and mammalian cells, and HIV-1) to unveil new protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) and to study their molecular roles. She is an Agricultural Engineering from “Instituto Superior de Agronomia, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa”, Portugal. Between 1997-98 she awarded an International MSc in Biotechnology jointly from a university in UK and the Netherlands having performed her research project in the Department of Plant Pathology, at University of California in Davis, USA in the field of bacterial blight disease in rice. She did her PhD at The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL), John Innes Centre, University of East Anglia, in the UK, between 2000-04, having worked in plant pathogen interactions cloning a major regulator of plant disease resistance. Between 2005 and 2020 she sought to further develop her biochemistry skills and joined the MRC, Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology, as Investigator Scientist to work on protein post-translational modifications in eukaryotic model organisms. She Since February 2021 she is the Director of New Biopesticides Department at InnovPlantProtect in Elvas, Portugal where she manages a team of eight researchers working towards the development of peptide, dsRNA and Biological Control Agents (BCAs) based plant protection products to combat several bacterial and fungal plant diseases affecting Mediterranean crops.
