Jorge Relvas, nota biográfica 2023: Jorge Relvas é Professor Associado com Agregação e, presentemente, subdiretor da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, e investigador integrado do Instituto Dom Luíz (IDL-Laboratório Associado). Em representação de Ciências, é Presidente da Direção do Centro Ciência Viva do Lousal, numa antiga aldeia mineira no Concelho de Grândola onde decorre um programa integrado de reabilitação, na Faixa Piritosa Ibérica. ex-Presidente da Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits (SGA). Membro do painel editorial do Boletin Geologico y Minero, de Espanha, da Comissão Nacional das Olimpíadas da Geologia e das Comissões Organizadoras de muitas reuniões científicas internacionais. Participou em 15 excursões de campo a províncias mineiras internacionais e em 5 missões oceanográficas; foi o chefe de missão em vários mergulhos em submersíveis tripulados e não tripulados na Crista Média atlântica. Autor de dezenas de artigos científicos publicados em revistas creditadas e de centenas de comunicações científicas em congressos internacionais, muitas delas como orador convidado. Distinguido com o prémio “Melhor Artigo Científico da Revista Mineralium Deposita”, em 2002, e com a “KGHM-Kroll Silver Medal”, atribuída pela Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits, em 2021. Jorge Relvas, short bio 2023: Jorge Relvas is Associate Professor with Habilitation and, currently, vice-dean of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, Portugal, and senior researcher at Instituto Dom Luíz (IDL); Past President of the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits (SGA). Member of the editorial board of the Boletin Geologico y Minero, Spain, and of the organizing committee of many international scientific meetings. He has participated in 15 field trips to international ore districts, and in 5 oceanographic missions, where he was the chief scientist of several submersible dives at the Mid Atlantic Ridge. Author of tens of scientific articles and hundreds of presentations in international scientific meetings, many of them as invited keynote speaker. Distinguished with the “Best Paper in Mineralium Deposita, 2002”, and with the “SGA KGHM-Kroll Silver Medal”, 2021. President of a Science Centre at Lousal, an old mining village under a rehabilitation program at the Iberian Pyrite Belt.

The Loki’s Castle hydrothermal vent field is composed of several active, over 10 m tall chimneys, producing up to 320ºC fluid. The main sulfides in chimneys are sphalerite, pyrite and pyrrhothite, with generally lesser chalcopyrite. Alteration products collected adjacent to chimneys contain much anhydrite, gypsum and talc.   4. Geological mineral exploration tools in the Arctic near Loki's Castle, 74 degrees N (South Knipovich Ridge). Discovery of the Loki’s Castle hydrothermal vent field (2008) was a great surprise, given its size and vigour of hydrothermal discharge. Several characteristics, including the fauna, separate it from either Atlantic or Pacific-type hydrothermal sites.
