António Francisco Ambrósio (AFA) is Coordinator Investigator/Full Professor at the Fac. Medicine, Univ. Coimbra (FMUC), Portugal. He is the Head of Retinal Dysfunction and Neuroinflammation Lab at Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR-FMUC) since 2002. AFA was the Director of iCBR between 2016 and 2021. iCBR is a member of CIBB (Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology) consortium. Presently, AFA is member of: Scientific Council of iCBR and CIBB, Ethical Committee of the Multidisciplinary Institute for Ageing (MIA)-Portugal, Scientific Committee of the PhD Program in Health Sciences at FMUC, and member of the Board of Directors of the Collaborative Laboratory VectorB2B - Drug Developing - Association for Research in Biotechnology, representing the Univ. of Coimbra. Former professional activities include (among others): member of the Directory Board of CIBB (2016-2021); Coordinator of the Research Management Office at FMUC (2016-2019); Vice-Director for Scientific Research at FMUC (2012-2015); President, vice-President and Secretary-General of the Portuguese Biochemical Society (2005-2014); Secretary-General (2005-2007) and co-founder of the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapies; President of the Portuguese Association of Biochemists (2000-2004). AFA has been deeply involved in post-graduation activities at FMUC, namely in the Master in Biomedical Research, Master in Molecular and Translational Neuroscience, and the PhD Program in Health Sciences, being in charge of the Vision Sciences area. He has supervised 10 post-docs, 25 PhD students, 30 MSc students and 31 research fellows. AFA has published 171 peer-reviewed papers, 10 book chapters, holds an H factor of 45 and has 5,618 citations (Web of Science). The total funding gathered from national and international agencies, pharmaceutical companies and research programs surpasses 5 million Euros, as Principal Investigator, in 22 major projects. Along the years AFA has established many national and international collaborations. He was also awarded the prestigious Award 'Prémio Mantero Belard - Prémios Santa Casa Neurociências' in 2015. AFA has been invited speaker in national and international meetings and seminars (more than 60 talks) and grant reviewer for national and international Foundations (Foundation for Science and Technology, Portugal; Fight for Sight, UK; Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation, USA; National Science Centre, Poland; The Wellcome Trust, UK/DBT India Alliance; Swiss National Science Foundation; Alzheimer Nederland; German Research Foundation; French National Research Agency). Along his career he has been involved in many outreaching activities for young students and the general public. His main scientific interests are focused on retinal degenerative diseases, namely diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, which are leading causes of vision loss and blindness worldwide. He has been interested in elucidating the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying retinal dysfunction and degeneration, paying particular attention to the role played by neuroinflammation mediated by microglial cells (immune cells of central nervous system), as well as to cell-cell crosstalk and neuroprotection. AFA has been interested in identifying new drug targets and developing advanced therapies for retinal diseases. Moreover, he is interested in identifying novel biomarkers of disease onset and progression for retinal degenerative diseases, namely biomarkers based on texture analysis of optical coherence tomography data, as well as in drug repurposing. His Lab uses a plethora of in vitro models, including cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells from patients with retinal diseases, and animal models of disease, and it has the necessary equipment for assessing in vivo retinal structure, function and visual acuity.
