Antonio M Mendes. I am a postdoctoral researcher with an extensive expertise in Malaria acquired over more than 15 years in various research laboratories around the world. Most significantly, my experience covers a large spectrum of research areas in malaria, ranging from malaria transmission systems (area in which I developed my university and PhD studies), to insect transgenesis (area in which I have collaborated in various studies) and the biology of mammalian infection by Plasmodium parasites, with particular emphasis on the hepatic stages of parasite development (area in which I have worked during the last eight years as a postdoctoral researcher). I have a profound knowledge of malaria immunology, in particular immune response to whole-sporozoite vaccination as well as innate immune responses of insects during infection gathered during the execution of the various projects in which I have participated. To successfully execute these projects, I had specialized training and acquired broad experience in setting up and managing human and animal malaria infection studies, including the implantation of field studies and the collection and handling of samples from clinical trials, non-human primate, mouse and rabbit studies. My knowledge and experience in molecular biology techniques, including genetic manipulation of Plasmodium parasites, as well as techniques for immune response measurement, such as multi-parameter flow cytometry, ELISA, IFAT, ELISpot, immunofluorescence microscopy, allowed for me to successfully complete these projects and make a significant contribution for the advancement of the malaria research field. In particular, my work in the last years as a postdoctoral fellow established a novel approach to whole-sporozoite immunization against malaria and culminated in the generation and clinical validation of PbVac, the first vaccine candidate of its class. Presently, I continue pursuing the scientific challenge of developing new malaria vaccine candidates and expand the body of knowledge need to fight this devastating infectious disease,
