Steve Mendes Catarino obtained his Biochemistry degree at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra in 2003 and completed his PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2010/10/22 at the Faculty of Medicine University of Coimbra. SC has published 22 articles in peer-reviewed journals. Co-supervised 3 MSc dissertations. Participates and/or participated as a Researcher in 6 projects and as a Scientific Initiation Fellow in 1 project. SC is currently a Junior Researcher employed at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC), and part of the research teams at the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR), the Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) and the Clinical and Academic Centre of Coimbra. SC has an extensive background in the gap junction field where his contributions have helped to elucidate the life cycle of connexin proteins and several of their non-canonical functions and, in the last decade, the application of these to cardiovascular sciences. Although SC has never been awarded a significant Research Grant as a PI, as far back as his days as a PhD student, SC has participated in the planning, writing and execution of research grants. As a team member, SC contributed for the acquisition of funding and completion of several research grants sponsored by the Foundation of Science and Technology, the major research funding agency of Portugal.
