Currently a student of the Textile Engineering Doctoral programme, Liliana Melro graduated in Applied Chemistry - Specialization in Quality Control of Plastic Materials (2008) and has a master's degree in Micro/Nano Technologies (2011), both at University of Minho. During the master she had the chance to work and write a thesis at the Dresden University of Technology, Germany, for 6 months, under the ERASMUS programme. She has working experience as a researcher for nearly 6 years, mainly in chemistry and composite materials. As a student, including her master's theses, Liliana acquired knowledge and know how indifferent areas like microbiology, cell culture, cytotoxic assays, and colloid chemistry. Part of her work resulted in her first publication. Immediately after graduation she started her research activities at CICECO, University of Aveiro (03/2012-11/2013), as part of an international project supported by IUPAC-FCT, where she was responsible for the development of waterborne emulsion polymerization of nanocomposites. This research resulted in a journal paper publication. Liliana has 3 years of experience in atomistic computer simulations of composite materials as a researcher at Aalborg University (Aalborg, Denmark - 12/2013-11/2016), which resulted in two journal publications and a conference paper. Liliana did an internship at the department of R&D Marine Business Support, Hempel A/S (Copenhagen, Denmark - June 2017), where she aided the company with a statistical analysis study of dry film thickness of anti-fouling paints, in order to verify if the paint specifications applied to ships were the correct ones. From November 2018 to August 2020 she worked at the Department of Polymer Engineering, University of Minho, developing novel biomaterials based on proteins.
