Fernanda Sousa graduated in Applied Mathematics at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP) in 1984 and joined the Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) as Teaching Assistant in 1990, after a short time teaching at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto (FEP). In 1994 she started her post-graduate studies in Statistics/Mathematics, where in 2001 she obtained her degree of Ph.D. in Mathematics – Statistics in the Sciences and Technology Faculty of the New University of Lisbon. She has pursued her teaching and research career at FEUP. Main research interests are from Statistics, namely Multivariate Data Analysis, Data Sciences, Classification, Classification Validation and aplications engineering.

2010/07 - 2014/11 Founded in 1985, the IFCS is a federation of national, regional, and linguistically-based classification societies. It is a non-profit, non-political scientific organization, whose aims are to further classification research. Amongst other activities, the IFCS organises a biennial conference, publishes a newsletter, and supports the Journal of Classification (JoC) and the journal Advances in Data Analysis and Classification (ADAC).
