I hold a degree in Applied Physics-Mathematics (UPorto), a Master¿s in History and Philosophy of Science (UNLisbon), and a Ph.D. in Mathematics (Applied Mathematics) from the University of Coimbra (2011). I am a researcher at UC¿s Department of Mathematics and affiliated with the Centre for Earth and Space Research (CITEUC). From 2012 to 2017, I worked as a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Centre François Viète at the University of Nantes, France, and in 2017, I was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge¿s Department of History and Philosophy of Science. My research has predominantly focused on the 18th and 19th centuries, a pivotal era for institutionalising Portugal¿s exact and physical-mathematical sciences. This period, rich in scientific transformation and influenced by Enlightenment ideals, marks a significant phase in the country¿s evolution of modern science and practices. It was a time when global communication networks began to link people, science, technology, methodologies, and literature, significantly impacting educational and scientific institutions. During this era, Portugal stood at the cusp of establishing modern scientific disciplines, mirroring broader European advancements. However, in the Portuguese history of science, a noticeable void exists in the study of mathematical sciences during the Enlightenment. This oversight overlooks a critical period that fostered the development of scientific communities and institutions. My work aims to bridge this gap, offering new insights into Portugal¿s scientific contributions from the Ancien Régime to Liberalism and placing them within scientific networking and technical exchanges with other key European nations. Recent research underscores the long Enlightenment as a time of considerable progress in mathematical and related sciences. Calculus, mechanics, physics, and chemistry developments led to significant breakthroughs. The emergence of fields like probability theory and mathematical statistics further exemplified this era¿s impact, having profound theoretical, practical, societal, and political implications. However, Portuguese scientific historiography has yet to fully integrate mathematics and related sciences with other disciplines during this period, resulting in a fragmented understanding of their influence on modern Portuguese scientific culture and European science at large. My research endeavours have tried to fill this lacuna by examining the intricate web of national and international networks essential for exchanging ideas and scientific advancements. These collaborations played a crucial role in shaping local scientific practices promoting a culture of shared knowledge and progress. Furthermore, my studies have extended to the broader cultural impact of these scientific developments, observing how the growth of exact and physical-mathematical sciences influenced education, politics, and the arts. This comprehensive view has enriched our understanding of the era's intellectual landscape, highlighting the interconnectedness of scientific progress and cultural evolution. I have authored book chapters and journal articles, presented at various national and international conferences, and served as a field editor for Springer's Encyclopedia of Astrobiology (3vols, 2nd ed. 2015). Regarding research projects, I was the PI of the HISTIGUC project funded by FCT with a budget of ¿239,776.56, focusing on the Geophysical Institute of UC. I have also been involved in various other projects. Beyond my research, I was the Director of CITEUC (2019-21), managing substantial budgets and scientific/administrative tasks. I am also a board member of the National Seminar on the History of Mathematics (SNHM), part of the Portuguese Mathematical Society (SPM), which is dedicated to researching and organising national and international events in the history of mathematics.
