Elva Bonifácio Andrade graduated in biochemistry (University of Porto [UP]) in 2005 and obtained her Ph.D. in biomedical sciences at the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS-UP) in 2013. Her PhD work focused on the characterization of the innate immune mechanisms leading to neonatal susceptibility to Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections. Part of her PhD work focused on characterising the innate immune mechanisms leading to neonatal susceptibility to Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections. Part of her PhD work was distinguished with the 'Excellence in Immunology Mario Arala Chaves Award' by the Portuguese Society for Immunology, in 2013. She was a postdoc at ICBAS-UP, before being awarded a highly competitive Researcher position within the scope of the Stimulus of Scientific Employment, individual support from FCT, in 2019. During her postdoctoral studies, she developed a mouse model that recapitulates GBS neonatal infection pathogenesis, with features similar to those described in humans (Andrade et al., 2018. Nature Communications). This work gave her the 'SPI Paper Award 2019', by the Portuguese Society for Immunology. Since 2020, she has been a research scientist at i3S (Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, University of Porto), where she established a new line of research focused on understanding the complex neuroimmune interactions during GBS disease, aiming at promoting neonatal and child well-being, by developing new therapeutic and neuroprotective strategies. She is currently supervising two PhD student and one Master student, and co-supervising one PhD student, while had also successfully supervised/co-supervised 16 BSc and 7 MSc students. She was an evaluator of 4 BSc Degrees, 5 MSc Dissertations, 1 PhD seminar, and 3 PhD Thesis. As principal investigator, she has recently been awarded one CEEC from FCT as well as two projects as PI/Co-PI from FCT. Over the last 5 years, she also taught Immunology at the School of Health, Polytechnic Institute of Porto (at both BSc and MSc levels). Recently, she started teaching Microbiology and Immunology at ICBAS-UP. She was involved in the scientific and organising committees of scientific meetings and participated in several outreach activities with ICBAS-UP and i3S to increase public awareness of Science through school programs.
