Currently, A.S. Gomes is an Assitant Researcher at CIIMAR, in Bioinspired Ocean interfaces (BiO) group, under the PRR funded academia-industry consortia INOVAMAR (WP2 Vertical Bivalves; C644915664-00000026). Her main research interests are focused on sustainable antifouling strategies, particularly the disclosure of molecular targets and antifouling mechanisms of action. She was a post-doc researcher at CIIMAR in an environment-related FCT-funded project (PTDC/CTA-AMB/0853/2021), by seeking new eco-friendly small molecules with nontoxic antifouling activity to prevent biofouling by marine organisms in submerged artificial infrastructures. A.S. Gomes completed her PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology applied to Health Sciences, U.Porto (2019) and MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences, U.Porto (2011). She has a strong background in a multitude of scientific areas and methodologies nurturing an interdisciplinary way of working and eager for continuous learning, integrating different perspectives to solve a problem. She worked in medicinal chemistry, biotechnology, nanotechnology, biophysics, particularly in drug discovery and mechanism of action elucidation. She developed technical skills on chemical synthesis, spectroscopic analytical methods (HPLC-DAD, MS, NMR, FTIR), bioactivity assays, recombinant protein production, in vitro cellular assays, microscopy, flow cytometry, molecular targets expression (WB, IHC), binding assays and structural biology (crystallization, DSF,DLS, DSC, ITC, MST, CETSA, STD-NMR). A.S.Gomes during her PhD worked in renowned national and international labs, namely at (i) Molecular Biotechnology Laboratory (CEB, U.Minho, 1 year), (ii) Macromolecular Crystallography Laboratory (UCIBIO, FCT-U.NovaLisboa, 6 months), (iii) Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics (IRB Barcelona, Spain, 1 week), and (iv) Santos' Lab (U.Helsinki, Finland, 6 months), contributing to her ability to learn fast, work in international environment and adapt in different teams' dynamics and lab workflows. A.S. Gomes was PI in one CIIMAR SEED project (2023-2024), achieving scientific autonomy. She was a team member of two finished FCT funded projects (PTDC/DTP-FTO/1981/2014 and PTDC/MAR-BIO/4694/2014), and one proof-of-concept BIP.U.Porto project OceanCare. A.S.Gomes is author or co-author of 14 international peer-reviewed publications, of which 6 as first author, has an h-index of 12, with >360 citations by >320 documents. The publications span several research fields oncobiology, microbiology, pharmacology, toxicology, biochemistry, structural biology, drug discovery, nanotechnology and antifouling. Four of the publications are key reviews on drug pharmacokinetics, target protein structure, cellular metabolism and antifouling research. She has participated in national and international conferences/meetings with 14 talks and 18 poster communications. Scientific and lab experience has allowed A.S.Gomes to develop her resilience, decision ability, project management, writing, editing and science communication skills. A.S.Gomes has team coordinating and project management duties, has fostered national and international collaborations, and is supervising 2 MSc and 2 BSc students, and also has experience in teaching, both lectures and laboratory classes, allowing her to developed leadership and pedagogical skills. Recently, she concluded a postgrad course in Scientific Illustration motivated by her passion for Arts and Science.
