Currently, A.S. Gomes is a researcher at CIIMAR under the Vertical Bivalves project funded by PRR, with focus on antifouling strategies for aquaculture. She was a post-doc researcher at CIIMAR in an environment-related FCT-funded project, by seeking new eco-friendly small molecules with nontoxic antifouling activity to prevent biofouling by marine organisms in submerged artificial infrastructures. Her main interests are related to Scientific research with Sustainable applications and Education, by addressing current problems that distresses ecology and bringing together scientific community and society through Teaching, Arts and Science. A.S. Gomes completed her PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology applied to Health Sciences, University of Porto (2019) and MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Porto (2011). Her background had allowed the contact to a multitude of scientific areas and methodologies nurturing an interdisciplinary way of working and eager for continuous learning, integrating different perspectives to solve a problem. She worked in medicinal chemistry, biotechnology, nanotechnology, biophysics and drug discovery and mechanism of action elucidation, developing technical skills on chemical synthesis, spectroscopic analytical methods (HPLC-DAD, NMR, FTIR), bioactivity assays, vector construction, recombinant protein production, in vitro cellular assays, microscopy, flow cytometry, molecular targets expression (WB, IHC), binding assays and structural biology. A.S.Gomes during her PhD worked in different national and international collaborations/labs, namely at (i) Molecular Biotechnology Laboratory (CEB, UMinho, 1 year), (ii) Macromolecular Crystallography Laboratory (UCIBIO, FCT-UNovaLisboa, 6 months), (iii) Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics (IRB Barcelona, Spain, 1 week), and (iv) Santos' Lab (Uni.Helsinki, Finland, 6 months), contributing to her ability to learn fast, adapt to new methodologies, work in international environment and indifferent teams' dynamics and lab workflows. A.S. Gomes was a member of two finished FCT funded projects (PTDC/DTP-FTO/1981/2014 and PTDC/MAR-BIO/4694/2014) and is a current member of one ongoing FCT-funded project (PTDC/CTA-AMB/0853/2021). A.S.Gomes is author or co-author of 13 international peer-reviewed publications, of which 6 as first author, has an h-index of 12, with >333 citations by >289 documents. The publications cover several research fields oncobiology, microbiology, pharmacology, toxicology, biochemistry, structural biology, drug discovery and nanotechnology. Three of the publications are reviews on hot topics about drug pharmacokinetics, target protein structure and cellular metabolism. She has participated in national and international conferences/meetings with 10 oral and 15 poster communications. Scientific and lab experience has allowed A.S.Gomes to develop her resilience, decision ability, work planning and coordination, writing, science communication and personal management skills. A.S.Gomes also has experience in teaching, both lectures and laboratory classes. Through her experiences, she developed pedagogical, leadership, group and project management, communication and editorial skills. Recently, she concluded a postgrad course in Scientific Illustration motivated by her passion for Arts and Science.
