Isabel A. Abreu graduated in Biochemistry (University of Lisbon, Portugal) in 1996 and completed her PhD in Biochemistry in 2002 (NOVA University Lisbon, Portugal). In 2003, she was a Research Associate at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (NY, USA), and in 2005, she joined the Rockefeller University (NY, USA), where she started to study Plant Biology and post-translational modifications (PTMs). She returned to Portugal in 2007 and joined ITQB NOVA as a postdoctoral fellow. She was then awarded an Assistant Researcher contract (Ciência 2008) at the IBMC, Porto, Portugal, and again returned to ITQB NOVA, in 2012. In 2015, she was awarded a 5-year Principal Investigator position at ITQB (FCT Investigator) and established an independent research group: Proteome Regulation in Plants. She became a permanent researcher in 2020. Her lab studies the molecular mechanisms behind the fast adaptation of plants to environmental changes, targeting protein regulation by posttranslational modifications (PTMs). It aims to contribute with tools to manipulate plant metabolism towards maximizing production in non-ideal growth conditions to mitigate climate change's impact on our agriculture. She secured 7 international (1 as PI, 1 as WP Leader, 5 as researcher) and 10 FCT grants (3 as PI, 3 as Co-PI, 4 as researcher), and authored 49 peer-reviewed publications: 33 in Q1 (13 in top 10%); 2925 citations; h-index 28. She supervised 4 postdocs, 5 PhD Thesis and 3 MSc Dissertations. Isabel Abreu is a member of the Scientific Committees of PhD course Plants for Life and Master course Biotechnology for Sustainability, which she also Directs. She also coordinates and teaches 3 Curricular Units for PhD and MSc students. Isabel Abreu is the Coordinator for ITQB NOVA of the ITQB/iBET Mass Spectrometry Unit. She is the Vice-Director of the Research Unit Green-it and has sat at the Institute Council of ITQB NOVA, since 2023.
