Naiara Fernández Hernández

Dr. Naiara Fernández, a native of Bilbao, Spain (1984), earned her Bachelor's degree in Chemical Sciences in 2007. She subsequently pursued an MSc and completed her Ph.D. in Industrial and Synthetic Chemistry in 2012 at the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, Spain. Her doctoral research focused on asymmetric synthesis, aiming to create high-value chiral compounds. This included a three-month research stint at Edinburgh University, culminating in her thesis being awarded Cum Laude with a Special Mention for International Doctor. Following her doctorate, Dr. Fernández embarked on a distinguished career in research and development across various institutions. She began at CICEnergigune, Spain, contributing to the development of positive and negative electrodes for lithium and sodium batteries through design, synthesis, and validation efforts. In 2015, she joined ITQB-NOVA in Portugal as a synthetic organic chemist. Her responsibilities expanded from designing and synthesizing organic ligands for metal catalysts to focusing on a family of molecules compatible with microbiological systems. In 2017, Dr. Fernández advanced to iBET as a Senior Research Associate, where she co-managed a project focused on microalgae biomass valorization through the extraction of valuable biocompounds and their chemical and biological characterization. Presently, she holds the position of Principal Scientist at the Natural Bioactives and Nutraceuticals Process Technology Lab at iBET. Her work spans national and European projects, emphasizing green extraction techniques, purification processes, chemical characterization, micro-formulation, and the study of natural compounds beneficial to human health. Throughout her career, Dr. Fernández has made significant academic contributions, authoring 27 papers in peer-reviewed journals (h-index of 15). She has also been an active mentor, supervising two Ph.D. students (with one currently ongoing) and four Master's students to completion.
