My main focus concern effects and occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the environment. This is a broad multi-disciplinary research field and I have chosen to address my research topics together with expertise from a wide range of disciplines. I have focused on four inter-connected major topics: selection, method development, fate and effects; and have successfully been able to start collaborations and projects that address all these topics. Selection - I have participated in several mode of based and multivariate collaboration projects with the aim to predict which pharmaceuticals that could have a high environmental relevance. These resulted in 5 published papers and provided a scientific foundation for the selection of which pharmaceuticals that we should develop analytical protocols for and include in screening campaigns. Method development - Since the pharmaceuticals of interest in my studies have been selected based on various selection techniques and in collaboration with experts in other fields, they most often lack relevant environmental analytical protocols. Most often the developed analytical methods are published in respectively study, but 3 papers have been published in general analytical chemistry journals. Fate - My main focus so far have been on the fate of pharmaceuticals in the environment and my projects range from national and international screening campaigns of treated effluent and surface waters to targeted analysis of bioconcentration in fish. Effects - I have participated in close collaboration with research groups at Gothenburg University and at Uppsala University in several effect studies. It has been especially rewarding to be able to initiate and participate in ¿follow-up¿ studies that focus on pharmaceuticals that initially were detected in surface waters or in wild caught fish. The last 5 years I have started a highly successful and productive collaboration with ecological researcher in order to study the effects of pharmaceuticals with behavioural modifying mode of action. I have had a couple of very productive years and have been involved in several successful projects but there are three projects that I consider to be my major achievements; Studies on effluent from a pharmaceutical production site. Bioconcentration in biota. Behavioural studies on exposed fish. I have together with Joakim Larsson (Gothenburg University) focused on the fate and effects of effluents from pharmaceutical production in an industrial area in Patancheru, India. These studies focus on the extremely high levels of pharmaceuticals that could be detected in surface waters near the pharmaceutical production plants as well as a local sewage treatment plant. Our results, which were published in ETC (Fick et al, 2009, Contamination of surface, ground, and drinking water from pharmaceutical production), received a massive media attention and were highlighted by Washington Post, Times of India and Nature News, among others. In another project together with Joakim Larsson (Gothenburg University) we focused on the bioconcentration of pharmaceuticals in fish exposed to treated sewage effluent (Fick et al. 2010, Environ. Sci. Technol. 44(7):2661- 6). Our main finding, that levonorgestrel could be detected at pharmacological relevant concentrations in exposed fish, contributed to increase the research focus on this pharmaceutical. In a series of publications we studied the behavioral effect of Oxazepam, a commonly used anxiolytic, on exposed fish. To detect behavioural effects we quantified how exposed fish individuals performed in personality tests measuring e.g.their boldness, activity and sociability. We significant effects at environmental concentrations and have lately focused on the ecological implications of these effects. These studies have received an extreme interest both in media and in the scientific community, especially our initial paper that was published in Science 2013.
