Duarte Nuno Carvalho was born in 1992 in Lousada, Porto, Portugal. Nowadays, he works since 1st of April 2023 as an senior research technician at the Molecular and Analytical Medicine Lab (I3s, and Faculty of Medicine, U.Porto) where his work is focused on applying his skillset in biotechnology and materials towards the development of new molecular-based biosensing technologies for neurodegenerative diseases, hired by the project LIFESAVER (H2020-LC-GD-2020-3-101036702-LIFESAVER). As a result, he contributed until now with 1 scientific article as shared first authorship, 1 as co-author, and 1 poster communication. As background, he graduated in Marine Biology and Biotechnology at Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, Escola Superior de Turismo e Tecnologia do Mar de Peniche, campus 4, Portugal, in 2015. After that, during his master's degree in Marine resources biotechnology, he had the opportunity to be involved in research activities in 3B's Research Group, I3Bs ¿ Research Institute on Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics, University of Minho, which his work resulted in his master's thesis, entitled "Marine collagen-chitosan-fucoidan cryogels as cell-laden biocomposites envisaging cartilage tissue engineering" finished in 2017, and realized three scientific publications (1 as the first author), 1 patent and 2 scientific posters, also within the marine biomaterials field. In 2018, he joined 3B's Research Group after being awarded a grant under Project 0245_IBEROS_1_E, financial support of FEDER in the scope of the INTERREG V-A Espanha-Portugal (POCTEP) 2014-2020 program where he had the opportunity to continue the work on the exploration and valorization of marine resources and their by-products, in a sustainable form, for the development of innovative biomaterials for biomedical applications under cartilage tissue engineering approach, linked to the areas of green and blue technology. In September of 2018, he started the Ph.D. degree in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cells (TERM&SC), funded by "Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia" (FCT, Portugal), ref. PD/BD/143044/2018 and COVID/BD/153028/2022 (exceptional scholoarship for COVID mitigation - 5 months financial), under the supervision of Doctor Tiago H. Silva from 3B's Research Group (Portugal) and Doctor Michael Gelinsky from Technical University of Dresden (Germany) which he spends 4 months in Dresden for apply him marine research to 3D bioprinting approach, resulting in 1 scientific article and 1 poster as first author. As a result of his entire Ph.D. work, he has contributed to 6 scientific publications as first author, 2 reviews also as first author and another 2 as co-author, 1 book chapter, and participated in international conferences, which resulted in 2 oral communications and 17 poster communications, 9 of them as first author. In summary, he has authored 7 peer-reviewed articles as the first author (accepted in Q1 journals), collaborated on 2 more as a co-author, and shares first authorship on 1 (currently submitted) publication. Additionally, he holds 1 patent, contributed a peer-reviewed book chapter, authored 2 reviews as the lead author, co-authored 2 more (with 1 under revision), delivered 2 oral presentations, and presented 18 posters at international conferences. Furthermore, he have been worked as a designer of scientific illustrations for several publications, project calls, and conferences.
