Adelaide Miranda is a tenured Research Engineer at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), where she focuses on bridging Life Sciences and Materials Science applying advanced nano-characterisation methods through the implementation of various nanomedicine research projects. At present, she is project co-Principal Investigator (PI) of Simultaneous Advanced Microscopies (SAM; FCT PTDC/NAN-OPT/31596/2017), which aims to introduce new combinations of Atomic Force Microscopy and Super-resolution Fluorescence Microscopy (SMF) into the biomedical field. In this context, she has contributed to high-profile publications introducing two new systems enabling for the first time simultaneous co-localized image formation of AFM with depth-discriminating fluorescence imaging. Her contributions to this active field of research will feature in an exciting review summarizing advancements in combined microscopy over the last two decades to appear alongside a cover design in Nanoscale early 2021. Furthermore, Adelaide co-organized an international workshop on combined microscopy November 2018 (http://combined-microscopy.inl.int/) sponsored by the Optical Society, Nikon and Bruker. Finally, Adelaide also co-coordinated a project in collaboration with the Biophysical Institute of Rio de Janeiro focused on the development of new lipoplex formulations as reprogramming agents for use in nanomedicine. This recently led to a high-profile publication in the Journal of Biophotonics as highlighted on its front cover of January 2021. During her employment at the INL, Adelaide has contributed to many research fields including fluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, light scattering simulations, fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular surface science https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3957-6288. Adelaide holds a PhD degree in Chemistry (2011) from the University of Porto (Portugal), where her doctoral research focused to the development of new synthetic methods of noble metal nanoparticles. During her doctoral studies Adelaide performed electron microscopy studies on nanoparticles at Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisboa, Portugal) and she did a secondment at Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, NM, EUA). Adelaide joined the INL in May 2009 and has been detached first to IMDEA (Madrid, Spain) and later to INESC-MN (Lisboa, Portugal) to gain expertise in X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and cleanroom operations, respectively.
