Dr Oleksandr Mykhaylyk (OM) is a soft matter physicist employed as a Senior Research Fellow in Crystallisation within the Chemistry Department of The University of Sheffield (TUOS). He has broad expertise in structural characterization of soft (polymers, gels and colloids) and hard (metals, ceramics, and compounds with close-packed and diamond-like crystal structures) matter using small-angle/wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS). He has published more that 100 peer-reviewed papers (H-index = 29). OM’s research interests are focused on development and application of structural models for characterisation of colloids, self-assembled nanostructures, lipids, polymers and biopolymers where he published more than 40 papers for the last five years. Four years ago he has established and currently heads Faculty of Sciences’ major facility Soft Matter AnalyticaL Laboratory (SMALL) specializing in X-ray scattering, rheology and optical birefringence techniques with more than 30 regular academic and industrial users. The SMALL has state-of-the-art SAXS/WAXS instrument (http://www.xenocs.com/products/xeuss-3-0) equipped with a high-flux Excillum (Sweden) liquid gallium X-ray source, first of its kind in the UK. OM and his team have performed more than 50 experiments at large scale international synchrotron and neutron facilities and his research proposals are regularly granted beamtime at Diamond Light Source, ESRF and ISIS. OM's recent grant portfolio includes a TSB grant on structural colour (33692-239251-101716, £463 K, Co-I), a Horizon 2020 grant on flow-induced phase transitions (EU consortium project 713475, €3.74 M, one of several PIs), a Leverhume Trust grant on SAXS studies of micellar nucleation (RPG-2016-330, £161 K, Co-I) and an EPSRC grant on ‘plastics: redefining single-use’ (EP/S025278, £1.01M, Co-I). OM is a member of the STFC Life Sciences & Soft Materials Advisory Panel, is a Guest Professor at the South China University of Technology (SCUT, Guangzhou) and a regular invited lecturer at various international summer schools on scattering held in Europe and China (for example, https://workshops.ill.fr/event/219/). He curently supervises 7 PhD students most of which are jointly funded by EPSRC CDT for polymers and colloids (EP/L016281/1) and industrial companies such as AkzoNobel, Aliaxis, DSM, Lubrizol and Unilever.
