Sandra Morais Cardoso is an Assistant Professor at Faculty of Medicine and the group leader of Gut-Brain Axis Group at CNC, University of Coimbra. Her most recent research focus on the role of the microbiome-mitochondria crosstalk in the activation of neuronal innate immunity and its impact in the development of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases. She published over 111 papers (H index= 54; >14000 citations; WoS). Mentored 10 PhD and 20 MSc students and coordinated 13 and participated in 14 research grants. In recognition of her professional track and contributions in the field of Health research, she was awarded a Medal of Merit from the Ministry of Health in 2013. The research developed on the role of mitochondria in the etiology and progression of Parkinson's disease was distinguished with the Janssen Neurosciences Award in 2014, and also with the Mantero Belard Prize (2016) by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. In 2023 she received the Pfizer award to the best research paper.
