Dr. Attila Köfalvi is a neurobiologist, Principal Investigator at CIBB - Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal. He received his PhD diplom with summa cum laude in Basic Medicine/Neurosciences at the Semmelweis Medical University, Budapest, in 2004, in a joint programme with the Nathan Smith Kline Institute (Orangeburg, NY) and the Institute of Experimental Medicine, Budapest, Hungary. He was an IBRO-funded post-doctoral fellow between 2004 and 2007 at CNC in Coimbra, before receiving the associate researcher position. He received 4 honors/awards so far, including a Young Investigator membership of the Network of European Neuroscience Institutes in 2009. He is integrated in the network of Associate Laboratories of the Portuguese Science Foundation. His research group is called "Laboratory of Neuromodulation and Metabolism", where the role of neuromodulators such as adenosine, endocannabinoids and insulin on neural communication, brain energy metabolism and brain disorders are studied, recently with emphasis on sexual dimorphism. He tutored 3 PhD theses and numerous MSc and BSc theses. He was promotor and principal investigator of so far 3 international projects/cooperations, 3 national grants, among them two FCT projects with a sum of 190,000 Euros, and two contracts with NIDA/NIH to study an animal model of Restless Legs Syndrome. He authored 67 publications with a sum Impact Factor of ~227, with a sum of ~3200 citations and an H-factor of 27, and reviewed 115 papers as a referee, as per Web of Science. He was the Editor and partial author of the book ¿Cannabinoids and the Brain¿ NY: Springer, ISBN: 978-0-387-74348-6. He holds Good Laboratory Practice certificate (2001) and Category "C" qualification for directing animal experiments from the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (2009). He is fluent in Portuguese, English (C2) and Hungarian. He has been the consultant for the Health Council of the Portuguese Parliament in 2019 for the legislation of medical cannabis in Portugal. He is a father of three. In his non-existent free time he pursues his first international chess title, by playing for the chess club of the Académica Association of the Coimbra University.
