I am an Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Neuroscience at NOVA Medical School (NMS) from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (UNL) in Portugal, and a Group Leader at the same Institution. My academic journey began with a degree in Biochemistry in 2000, followed by a DEA in Physiology in 2005 at the Univ of Valladolid, Spain. I completed my PhD in Pharmacology at UNL and the Univ of Valladolid in 2007, focusing on purines' role in hypoxic signaling in the carotid body (CB). In 2022, I received the Habilitation title from UNL. I returned to Portugal in 2007, and I was looking for a research field with more impact on Human health. I hypothesized that CB dysfunction was involved in the genesis of metabolic disorders and in 2009 I successfully applied for my 1st independent FCT research grant as a Principal Investigator. My studies on the CB resulted in important publications that opened new paradigms in the field, led to several prizes and consolidated my career as a Group Leader at NMS. Engaging with GSK and Galvani Bioelectronics from 2013 to 2019 paved the way for groundbreaking studies on neuromodulation for type 2 diabetes treatment. Over the past decade, my scientific studies in peripheral metabolism gave rise to numerous questions that have shaped the trajectory of my research. This includes exploring the connection between the peripheral and central nervous systems in metabolic regulation, as well as elucidating the neuronal mechanisms governing feeding behavior. My research within this field originated 2 patents and more than 80 peer-reviewed publications. Currently, I teach in the integrated master’s in medicine and in the degree of Nutritional Sciences as well as in Master and PhD courses. In addition to my scientific and pedagogical challenges, I have taken on roles in the management of the NMS, including being a member of the Scientific Council and on Council of Faculty, the participation in the animal Welfare committee and more recently on the Coordination of the animal facility. Moreover, I am actively engaged in promoting scientific outreach.
