Nuno Franco is a Project Manager at the Laboratory Animal Science group of the i3S, University of Porto. He has a background in both Science Education and Animal Biology, with a 5-year licentiate degree (MSc+M.Ed) in Biology and Geology Teaching (2003), a 4-year licentiate degree in (Animal) Biology (2007) from the University of Trás-os-Montes-e-Alto-Douro, and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Porto in 2012, with a thesis on animal welfare and refinement in biomedical research. His research topics include laboratory animal welfare and the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement of animal research), animal ethics, veterinary education, scientific quality and integrity, and the study of thermobiology for animal health and welfare assessment. He coordinates EU-funded (EC_TED_ENV/2021/OP/0011) "LAS-Learning Project" (2022-2024), aimed at developing reference e-learning modules for education and training in the European Union on animal welfare and ethics, pain assessment and alleviation (mice, rats, small and large ruminants, pigs and fowl), animal biology (for the same species), as well as modules for designated veterinarians, inspectors, and competence assessors. He is co-PI of FCT-funded EVIEDVET (PTDC/CED-EDG/0187/2020) project (2021-2024), on education for evidence-based veterinary medicine. Among other projects, he led WG5 of EU-funded ETPLAS Pilot Project, leads WG1 "Quality and Translatability of Research" of COST Action "IMPROVE" (CA21139), founded and is a member of the FELASA WG on Education in Experimental Design, and is Ethics and 3Rs Officer for COST Action "TEATIME" (CA20135). He is Past-President (2023-2024) of ETPLAS (EU Education & Training Platform for Laboratory Animal Science), board member of NGO "Animal Research Tomorrow" and Vice-President of the Portuguese Society for Laboratory Animal Science (SPCAL), as well as Independent Advisory Board Member of ERINHA-European Research Infrastructure on Highly Pathogenic Agents, and of ISIDORe - Integrated Services for Infectious Services for Infectious disease outbreak. Nuno teaches Experimental Design, Laboratory Animal Welfare, Animal Ethics, Legislation of Animal Use, Severity Classification, Pain and Suffering Assessment, and Animal Welfare and the 3Rs, in post-graduate courses and doctoral programs at six Portuguese higher education establishments, and has organized workshops on Experimental Design, Epidemiology, Science Communication, Project Evaluation, and Severity Classification of procedures (being a FELASA-designated trainer). He has delivered Experimental Design courses and workshops in Luxembourg, Latvia, Greece, and Italy. Nuno is a member of the Animal Welfare and Ethics Body (ORBEA) at the i3S and U. Porto’s Faculty of Medicine, and coordinates the Portuguese Network of Animal Welfare Bodies - 'RedeORBEA. In 2013, he received the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare 'Young Animal Welfare Scientist of the Year Award'. As of October 2024, Nuno has published 27 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 3 book chapters, 9 peer-reviewed conference papers, 51 conference abstracts, 1 encyclopaedia entry, and 2 biorXiv preprints (1000+ citations on Google Scholar, h-index=14, i10=17). He has 62 confirmed peer-reviews for 21 different journals on Clarivate (public profile accessible on-line), and has delivered 100 oral presentations (63 of which as invited speaker)
