Paulo Bartolo holds a PhD from the University of Reading (2001), an MSC in Mechanical Engineering (1996) and a first degree (Licenciatura – five year programme) in Mechanical Engineering (1993) both from the University of Lisbon (Portugal). Since August 2021, he is Professor at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Executive Director of Singapore Centre for 3D Printing (SC3DP) and Programme Director of the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC) hub at NTU. As Programme Director of the NAMIC Hub at NTU he is also member of the NAMIC Joint Cluster-Agency Management and NAMIC Cluster Project Evaluation Panel. He is Honorary Professor at Xi’an Jiatong-Liverpool University, Collaborator Professor at the Advanced Manufacturing Group at the Tecnologico de Monterrey (Mexico), and the University of Manchester (UK). Between 2014 and 2021, Prof. Bartolo was Chair Professor on Advanced Manufacturing at the University of Manchester, where he was the Head of the Manufacturing Group (2015-2021); Leader of the Innovative Manufacturing Research Theme (2015-2021); the Industry 4.0 Academic Lead (2018-2021); the theme leader for the Industry 5.0 societal challenge area within the Digital Futures (2018-2021); member of the Thomas Ashton Institute (Academic Lead for Industry 4.0 – implications for health and safety) (2019-2021); the coordinator of the “scale-up and manufacture” cross-cutting capability of the Advanced Medical Materials@Manchester platform; member of the Manchester Regenerative Medicine Network – Enabling Technologies domain (2020-2021); member of the GAMBICA University Industry Collaboration Council (2018-2021); member of the University Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Peer Review College (2019-2021); member of the University of Manchester Innovation Community (2020); member of the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE) Executive Committee (2020-2021); member of the Departmental Committee for the Research Excellence Framework 2021 (REF2021) Engineering Unit of Assessment 12 (UOA12) (2019-2021); member of the Advanced Manufacturing Strategic Oversight Group (2020-2021); member of the Management Board of the EPSRC & MRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Regenerative Medicine (2016-2021); and a representative of the University of Manchester at the Advanced Machinery and Productivity Institute. Between 1994 and 2014, Paulo Bartolo served the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (Portugal) as Lecturer, Assistant Professor and Coordinator Professor. At the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, he was the founder and Director of the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (2007-2013); Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department (2001-2009); President of the Research Assessment Commission (2009-2013); President of the Scientific Council for Research, Development and Advanced Studies (2009-2013); and Member of the Academic Council and Senate (2009-2013). He is a Fellow of CIRP (The International Academy of Production Engineering) and served the Academy as Chairman of the CIRP Scientific Technical Committee on Electro-Physical and Chemical Processes (STC E) (2016-2019) and as Vice-Chairman of STC E (2013-2016) and Vice-Chairman of the CIRP Collaborative Working Group on Biomanufacturing (2010-2012). Paulo Bartolo was also Advisor of the Brazilian Institute of Biofabrication funded by the Brazilian Government; member of the Additive Manufacturing Platform and member of the Global Alliance of Rapid Prototyping Associations.
