Raquel Ribeiro holds a BA in Communication Sciences from NOVA/FCSH, and PhD in Hispanic Studies from the University of Liverpool, UK (2009), funded by FCT, on the idea of Europe in the literary work of the Portuguese writer Maria Gabriela Llansol. She held a post-doctoral position (2010-2012) as a Nottingham Advanced Research Fellow (University of Nottingham, UK) to develop the research project about the memory of the Cuban presence in the Angolan civil war. She taught Brazilian Literature as a Visiting Fellow at St Peter's College at University of Oxford (2013-14), before joining the University of Edinburgh as a Lecturer in Portuguese Studies (2014-2021). The collaborative work with colleagues at Edinburgh, J Cupples (Human Geography) and C Gleghorn (Latin American Cinema), resulted in the co-writing and devising of three major funding bids: AHRC International Networking Grant 'Afro-Latin (in)visibility and the UN Decade: Cultural politics in motion in Nicaragua, Colombia and the UK¿'; Follow-on funding AHRC/Global Challenges Research Fund, ¿'Visibilizing Afro Cultural Connections and Geopolitical Dynamics in Nicaragua, Colombia, San Andrés and Providencia'; and UK Natural Environment Research Council/NERC Fund for '¿Ixchel: Building understanding of the physical, cultural and socio-economic drivers of risk for strengthening resilience in the Guatemalan cordillera¿'. She held a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2021) to complete a monograph which examines the Cuban cultural legacy of the Angolan war. As a freelance journalist and a creative writer, she has published extensively in the media (Portugal, UK and Latin America), and has been a holder of a Beca de Periodismo Cultural Gabriel García Márquez by the Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Latinoamericano (2013, Colombia). She is currently Associate Researcher at Instituto de História Contemporânea, NOVA/FCSH.
