Mariana N. Miranda has a PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering (concluded in April 2023) and an integrated master's in Environmental Engineering (concluded in July 2016), both by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP, Portugal). Mariana is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ, Belgium) Research Department - Ocean & Human Health Division - Plastics in Local and Global Waters, and as project manager for the Horizon Europe project INSPIRE - Innovative Solutions for Plastic Free European Rivers. Her current research is focused on plastic aging/degradation in the environment, microlitter observations/monitoring in rivers and at sea, assessment of plastic removal efficiency with different types of cleanup technologies, and harmonization of FTIR analysis for environmental plastic identification. Her PhD project focused on microplastics behavior (aging and their interaction with other contaminants) and microplastics attenuation through the use of technology. Before that, Mariana worked as a researcher in the fields of water resources, reservoir sedimentation, seawater desalination, and removal of micropollutants and microorganisms from water samples. In parallel to the academic career, Mariana has participated in several volunteering projects related to scientific and environmental literacy, sustainability, and forest conservation and restauration, mainly through EpDAH and V.OU. Additionally, she was a collaborator at the university newspaper JUP (2018-2019) and later editor in charge of the editorial office of Science and Health (2019-2021).
