Sofia Pinto Ramalho

Sofia P. Ramalho is a deep-sea ecologist working at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) of the University of Aveiro (Portugal). She holds a BSc in Biology from the University of Évora (2010), an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master of Sciences in Nematology (2012) and a PhD degree in Marine Sciences jointly awarded by the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and Ghent University, as part of the European Joint Doctoral Programme on Marine Ecosystem Health and Conservation (MARES; 2017). During her PhD, she developed original research on the impact of trawling fisheries on the diversity of deep-sea benthos and ecosystem functioning. Since the completion of her PhD in late 2017, she held two short-term postdoctoral positions and is now a junior researcher at DBio and CESAM, funded by the Portuguese National Science Foundation CEEC program (FCT; 6-year grant). SPR research is focused on the study of the deep-sea benthic diversity and ecosystem functioning in various habitats (e.g. abyssal plains, cold seeps and hydrothermal vents); and impact assessment and conservation of marine ecosystems under pressure from fisheries and deep-sea mining disturbance. She is co-leading the creation of the first comprehensive trait database for fauna from areas targeted for mining (FDmine database) aiming to support functional diversity and impact assessment studies in these areas. SPR participated in 11 R&D projects and authored 19 papers in peer-reviewed journals, all developed in a multidisciplinary and international context. Furthermore, she has co-authored various reports, databases deposited in open repositories and other online resources that support research activities. These works have been presented at several national and international conferences and workshops. She is an active member of the Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI) fisheries and minerals working groups and is involved in the Challenger 150 programme, a UN Ocean Decade endorsed global cooperative with a strong focus on increasing capacity to generate, understand, manage, and use ocean knowledge. Proven expertise in sampling and experimenting onboard oceanographic cruises, SPR participated in 15 oceanographic expeditions in various oceanographic settings and oceans (Arctic, Atlantic, Central and SE Pacific), accounting for over 200 days at sea, and involving a wide range of survey platforms (Remotely Operated Vehicles and towed camera systems) and sampling tools.
