Marlene Nogueira is an early-career neuroscientist in the first year of completing her PhD, dedicated to exploring the profound effects of early adverse experiences on brain development. Her research focuses on the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral consequences of out-of-home care and deprived parental environments, with a focus on institutionalized populations. By integrating cutting-edge techniques in epigenetics, neuroimaging, and cognitive assessment, Marlene seeks to unravel the biological and psychological mechanisms that link early-life adversity to long-term outcomes. As a researcher at the Psychological Neuroscience Lab at the University of Minho (Portugal), using a multidisciplinary approach, she contributes with her expertise to a variety of collaborative projects within the lab. Among her ongoing projects, Marlene is particularly interested in understanding emotional processing and cognitive development across different developmental stages. In addition to her research, Marlene is deeply committed to mentoring and supporting the next generation of scientists. She has co-supervised several undergraduate students and actively engages in science communication initiatives to bridge the gap between research and the public. Her dedication to fostering scientific curiosity and knowledge-sharing is evident through her involvement in organizing academic events and her advocacy for open science practices.

2025/03/15 - Current Included in the context of the Brain Awareness Week, and as part of the initiative "The Future Begins in the Cradle", the interactive workshop "Brain Detectives" invites children (ages 3-12) and their families to explore the wonders of the brain. Through engaging activities, participants will learn about brain functions, neuroplasticity, and how our brains help us think, feel, and grow. Designed to be fun and educational, the session will encourage curiosity about neuroscience in an accessible and playful way.

2019/03/12 - 2019/03/12 Workshop "From the Lab to the World: Why is it Important to Communicate Science?" Although we live in the age of knowledge, we are daily bombarded with various types and sources of information. However, this information does not always reach us in the most appropriate and accurate way, especially when it comes to scientific work. This workshop aimed to raise awareness about the challenges of science communication: fake science news and the media, scientific journalism, and the role of researchers in disseminating their work.
