Ana Sofia Brandão graduated in Biotechnology and Cellular Biology in 2009 and performed a Master in Cellular and Molecular Biology in 2011, both from Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa. Her Master thesis work was performed at Instituto de Medicina Molecular in the Tissue Morphogenesis and Repair Unit, under the supervision of Dr. Anna Zaidman-Rémy and Dr. Jennifer C. Regan. During that period, she studied the mechanisms that regulate cell migration of the Drosophila melanogaster immune cells during epithelial repair. Throughout her Master thesis, she not only learned the basic mechanism underlying tissue repair and immunity, but also developed and learned valuable skills, including advanced time-lapse confocal microscopy. This work gave rise to two major publications in renowned international peer-reviewed journals (e.g. PLos Pathogens), one of which was awarded with a NEDAI Research prize in 2014. In 2012 she was honored with a PhD fellowship from FCT, starting her PhD work from 2013 until 2019. This was developed at the Chronic Diseases Research Center (CEDOC), Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in the Tissue Repair and Inflammation Unit, being supervised by Prof. António Jacinto and Dr Anabela Bensimon-Brito. This project was mainly focused in bone regeneration using the zebrafish (Danio rerio) caudal fin as a model system. She addressed important questions in the field and shed light into the mechanisms that potentiate osteoblast reprogramming and differentiation. During this time, she developed genetic tools, including zebrafish transgenic lines, which are available for the scientific community, and used state of the art technology, namely in high quality quantitative microscopy and genome-wide gene expression methods. Her PhD work served as a basis for a three-year research grant, financed by FCT (PTDC/BIM-MED/0659/2014) in 2014, to study the mechanisms of cell plasticity and reprogramming during tissue regeneration. This PhD work originated a publication as a first author in an honorable international peer-reviewed journal (Brandão, A.S. et al 2019, JCS), where she showed a novel role of Hippo-Yap signalling pathway in controlling osteoblast differentiation in vivo in a regenerative context. Moreover, she was also awarded with a Honorable Mention for best PhD thesis in Developmental Biology by the Portuguese Society of Developmental Biology (SPBD) in 2020. Along her path, she attended and participated in 12 national and international conferences and events in the field of regeneration and repair. Currently, she is interested in further deciphering the mechanism underlying bone regeneration with her own research line within the Tissue Repair and Inflammation Lab at CEDOC, which lead to a research manuscript under revision on eLife showing the effect of energy metabolism during bone regeneration in zebrafish. The development of international partnerships is of great importance for scientific progress therefore, to fulfill her scientific ambitions as a research investigator, she is now collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of experts from other European institutions of renown, which include University of Leiden, University of Edinburgh and Marseille Medical Genetics. Furthermore, she has supervised/co-supervised trainees, master students, a graduate student and is currently supervising a PhD student. In addition to her main curriculum as a researcher, she also gives occasional lectures, is an instructor in several zebrafish handling courses and was an invited assistant professor at Nova Medical School. To conclude, as an outcome of Ana Sofia Brandão scientific curriculum, she possesses almost 11 years of continuous upgrade and expertise in the tissue repair and regeneration field and technological know-how.
