Sílvia Mendonça is a composer based in Santarém, Portugal. She has focused her artistic work in collaborative and co-creation contexts with other composers, performers, visual artists, dancers, choreographers, writers, and actors. She has been distinguished with two honourable mentions: in the 2nd Fernando Lopes Graça International Composition Prize (2011) with the work 'Rewind' for Harpsichord promoted by the Museu da Música Portuguesa, and in the 1st D. Dinis Composition Competition (2011) with the work 'Manta de Poemas' for choir, poetry by Antero de Alda, promoted by the choir of the University of Lisbon. In 2013, she completed an MA degree in Musical Composition and Theory in Escola Superior das Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE, Porto), with her thesis entitled "Compositor vs X - O espaço de construção da realidade composicional, Ideia=X". During this research, she participated in the ENOA Workshop of composition for voice and orchestra coordinated by the Festival d'Aix en Provence and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, oriented by the italian composer Luca Francesconi, with the work 'I am the escaped one' for mezzo-soprano, baritone and orchestra, poetry by Fernando Pessoa in 2012. The intersection between Pessoa's heteronymy and the perception of the sound phenomenon, led her to doctoral research in music. She completed her PhD in music composition at the University of Aveiro in March 2022, having been awarded a grant by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), with the research project 'The unison in the light of heteronymy'. Volunteer professor at the University of the Third Age of Santarém (Utis). Artist in residence at Centro Cultural Regional de Santarém (CCRS). Researcher in collaboration with the Contemporary Music Research Group (GIMC), integrated into CESEM - Centre for the Study of Sociology and Aesthetics of Music, FCSH, NOVA University Lisbon. Member of the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music (ESCOM) and of the Regional Network Psychology and Music (RNPaM).
