Nelson Castro research career started in 2013, after completing his integrated master in electronics engineering at University of Minho. He briefly worked as a research engineer at the Physics Centre, in the development of electronic instrumentation for polymer based printed sensors and smart materials tailoring for printing in the scope of a project called ¿Superfícies Interativas Multitoque baseadas em Polímeros Electroactivos¿. From 2014 to 2015, funded by IAPMEI, he worked in a business project based on printed sensors for smart interfaces, where he gained expertise in industrial needs addressing market research, product development and financial analysis. From 2015 to 2017 he went back to the Physics Centre at University of Minho, researching in the field of printed sensors and actuators based in polymeric materials, including magnetoelectric, piezoelectric, piezoresistive and capacitive technologies to use with prototype applications for industry. Throughout this period, he tutored 3 master students working on related themes and co-founded a nanotech start-up company Nanopaint lda aiming for the market with smart-inks production for sensor printing through conventional technologies. He gained high experience regarding sensor design by the electronics point of view, selection and layering of materials as well as the respective processing. Further, he improved his abilities with digital and analogue electronics instrumentation, printed circuit board design, data sampling and communication, as well as graphical user interface and respective programming languages based on C, C++ and C#. Through 2017, he had a short experience of 4 months in industry working at Somatica, Materials and Solutions in the development electronic interfaces for piezoelectric keyboards for industrial applications, while cooperating in research. However, in the middle of year, a new opportunity appeared and he took a position as a researcher and electronics consultant in the Basque Centre for Materials Foundation (Basque Country, Spain). A few months after, simultaneously, he enrolled in a doctoral program in project engineering in Project Engineering and Design department at Basque Country University in Bilbao, which he finished in November 2020. Throughout this time, he ended his association with Nanopaint lda in order to focus in the work at hand and Ph.D., where he gained experience in CAD design software and mechatronics, as well with biomaterials for tissue engineering applications. He worked since the beginning of 2023 as post-doctoral researcher at Physics Center at University of Minho in the development printed electronics, bio-sensors/actuators and biomimetic electromechanical devices for new approaches in scaffold-bioreactor interfaces for tissue engineering applications. Furthermore, throughout 2021, he co-founded a start-up company BioEnce S.L. in the Basque Country, in order to build a business project based on his Ph.D. thesis work, which he was awarded a financial and distinctive prize of the most innovative thesis by the University of Basque Country entrepreneurship support entity ZITEK. Nowadays, he has published 18 articles in international journals, 1 book chapter (4 as first author, 2 as submitting author), yielding an h-index of 11 and 405 citations, 1 patent, 8 oral and 5 poster presentations. Furthermore, he is coordinating a special issue as guest editor at MDPI Polymers entitled "Development and Application of Polymer-Based Materials for Printable Sensors". His entire scientific and entrepreneur path followed two main fields: electronic interface for smart materials and mechatronic solutions. Since the beginning of June 2023, he is working with integration of existing magnetic and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) in the integrated micro and nanotechnologies (IMiNa) research group at Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratories (INL).
