Marisa Ponce de León is a Mexican flautist, performer, artistic researcher, and educator based in Aveiro, Portugal. With a career that spans classical, contemporary, and experimental music, she has carved a unique path that combines music performance with ecological awareness and educational projects. Marisa began her music studies in Mexico, where she distinguished herself by winning various National Music Competitions between 2003 and 2007. After graduating with honors from the University of Veracruz, she served as principal flutist of the Chiapas Symphony Orchestra and co-founded both the Woodwind Academy and the Symphonic Band of the University of Sciences and Arts of Chiapas. There, she taught from 2011 to 2016, developing innovative pedagogical approaches and launching music programs that engaged local communities. In 2016, Marisa moved to Portugal to pursue a Master's degree in Music Performance at the University of Aveiro (classification of 19 out of 20), followed by a PhD in Music Performance (unanimously approved, with honor and distinction, in June 2024). Her doctoral thesis, “Phytopoetic Creation: An Artistic and Ecological Intervention”, explores artistic creation with plants and sonification technologies, focusing on human and non-human collaboration in performance, resulting on a Corpus of 9 creations. This project led her to present her work at international conferences and festivals across Europe and Latin America. Her PhD research has been supported by a prestigious fellowship from the Foundation for Science and Technology in Portugal. Her artistic practice is deeply interdisciplinary, blending music, improvisation, movement, and digital media. She frequently collaborates with artists from other fields, such as choreographers, dancers, and visual artists, to create performances that transcend traditional music boundaries, since her ERASMUS + mobility for two semesters at the Academy of Music and Drama of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden (2021). One of her significant artistic achievements includes the founding of the ensemble Sidereae Nunciae (co-founded in 2017), a collaboration with her wife Raquel Harmansukh, which merges contemporary classical music with ancestral instruments and improvisational practices. Marisa's work extends into education, where she has consistently focused on promoting creativity, collaboration, and attentiveness through music. She has led numerous educational projects aimed at diverse age groups, including children, university students, and professional musicians. A key example of her educational work is her first Pedagogical Workshop, already as an artistic researcher, at the “Centro de Experimentación y Producción Artística”, in Xalapa, Mexico. Entitled “Music, Nature and Body” (2020), it focused on artistic creation in youth musical education, through collective improvisation, attentive listening and contact with nature. Additionally, she has organized and delivered workshops such as the Immersion “Improvisación, Cuerpo y Movimiento” (2023), a program that helps classical musicians enhance their relationship with their instrument through body awareness and improvisation. Thus, her pedagogical approach emphasizes the use of sound as a creative tool, encouraging students to explore the possibilities of music through improvisation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and active listening. This innovative perspective on music education has led her to work with institutions such as the University of Aveiro (Portugal) or the University of Science and Arts of Chiapas (Mexico), and various international music festivals. Nowadays, Marisa is a postdoctorate at the Institute of Ethnomusicology - Centre of Music and Dance Studies (INET-md) at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, where she continues to merge her passions for performance, research, and education. Through her ongoing projects, she aims to inspire both her students and audiences to engage with music.
