I am a marine macroecologist, data scientist, and climate change analyst, leader of the Biodiversity Data Science research group of the Centre of Marine Sciences (www.biodiversitydatascience.com; CCMAR, University of Algarve). I have a strong background in statistical modelling and interest in the intricate patterns and drivers of marine biodiversity, biogeography and evolution, and the consequences and challenges imposed by future climate change to marine biodiversity. During the last years I have been using cutting-edge machine learning tools, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computational frameworks to address two major research questions: (1) how climatic and ecologic connectivity structure global marine biodiversity, from genes to ecosystems, and (2) what are the main consequences of global climate change and local selective pressures to marine biodiversity. These questions, particularly unknown for marine ecosystems, were studied at multiple temporal scales, from past climate extremes (e.g., Last Glacial Maximum, ~20,000 years ago) to the new generation of climate change scenarios. Importantly, by setting and comparing contrasting scenarios – such as the expectations underlying the Paris Agreement versus more drastic socio-economic pathways – I have been providing baselines to inform decision-makers on the biodiversity impacts resulting from different climate policies. Additionally, I have placed a strong strategic effort in identifying priority conservation areas that can safeguard biodiversity for future generations, with a particular focus on pinpointing climatic refugia and dispersal corridors structured by physical oceanographic connectivity. In support of the FAIR principle (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), I have been providing data to citizens, managers, and policymakers (e.g., through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports), contributing to the ongoing conversation on the conservation and management of marine biodiversity, aligning with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the post-2020 global biodiversity framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity. My scholarly output includes 75 publications in high impact journals (inc., Science and Nature climate Change), 23 of which as leading author and 13 as senior. An additional high impact publication was a blue paper in the scope of the High-Level Panel for Sustainable Ocean Economy. My publications were highly cited (> 3700 citations and h-index of 33) and distinguished with multiple awards. I have strong links with world leading PIs, with whom I work frequently (e.g., Dr. Miguel Araújo, Portugal, Dr. Kyle Cavanaugh, USA, Dr. Mark John Costello, Norway, Dr. Carlos Duarte, Saudi Arabia and Dr. Hu Zi-Min, China). I enrolled in relevant networking initiatives, such as the Elixir, the European Marine Science Network, the International Networking Event on Adaptation to Climate Change, the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) of the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity (GEO BON), and the Ocean Decade initiative (U.N. Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development). I teach as an invited Professor II in the PhD program of the University of Nord (Norway), and I have been supervising numerous researchers, as well as PhD, MSc and undergraduate students. I outreached to different audiences by participating in numerous international conferences, developing citizen science initiatives and my own on-line journal, and engaging the national media (inc., TV and radio broadcasting).
