Ermelindo Carreira Leal completed his PhD in Cell Biology in 2008 at the University of Coimbra, Faculty of Sciences and Technology and BSc in Biology in 2002 at the University of Coimbra, Faculty of Sciences and Technology. Dr Leal is Contracted Researcher at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC-UC), Center for Innovation in Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), University of Coimbra, Portugal. Dr. Ermelindo Leal has been working in the area of diabetic complications, with the interest of study novel therapies for the treatment of impaired diabetic wound healing. He has been the PI/co-PI of competitively funded projects from FCT and the European foundation for the study of diabetes (EFSD), including from the Pharma sector. Dr. Leal has extensive experience in the evaluation of therapeutic targets for chronic foot ulcers using pre-clinical validation models, such as cell cultures and wound healing animal models. Dr. Leal has expertise in the mechanisms leading to the progression of wound healing, such as modulation of inflammation, proliferation, angiogenesis, reactive oxygen species, extracellular matrix degradation/deposition, among others.
