Cristina Calheiros is Environmental Engineer and holds a PhD in Biotechnology. Currently is Research Scientist at CIIMAR, University of Porto, Coordinator of Centre for Monitoring and Environmental Interpretation (CMIA, Vila do Conde), Adjunct Professor at University of Saint Joseph (SAR Macao, China) and Invited Professor at Faculty of Sciences of University of Porto. She is Vice-President of the Portuguese National Association of Green Roofs (ANCV) and board member of The Portuguese Water Resources Association (APRH) (north region). Integrates the Editorial Board of Circular Economy and Sustainability journal (Springer) and she is guest editor in several special issues at Elsevier, MDPI and Frontiers journals. Integrates several COST Action, namely CA17133-Implementing nature-based solutions for creating a resourceful circular city; CA20133 - Cross-border transfer and development of sustainable resource recovery strategies towards zero waste and CA20138 - Network on water-energy-food nexus for a low-carbon economy in Europe and beyond (nexusnet). Her work focus on the development of nature-based solutions, such green roofs, vertical gardens, constructed and floating wetlands, towards sustainability of territories, ecosystems services provision, and as tools for climate change adaptation and mitigation. Also dedicates to the application of phytotechnologies (such phytoremediation, bioremediation), treatment and valorization of water, soil and solid waste, circular economy, circular cities, sustainable tourism, rural development and integrative productive practices, permaculture, geoethics, education for sustainability and environmental education. Responsible for providing educational resources, training (more than 1000 hours) and coordination in higher education courses, technological specialization courses, modular training and Lifelong Training. Develops an active role in the communication of Science-Technology-Society and outreach through short courses, talks, dissemination actions, training, exhibitions, technical visits and multimedia channels. She participated in several business model iteration programs for technologies developed in academia. In the last 5 years participated in 3 funded international projects related to education for sustainability (WISE/GOAL/PASSION), 2 international project related with nature-based solutions for a cleaner and safer Macao/China and 2 national projects (ECOSAN-Promoting integral ecological sanitation and SEIVA - Energetic systems and green infrastructures for agriculture). Background: Her internship was at Slater Limited-Environmental Biotechnology and at Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine-UK, related to phytoremediation of contaminated soils. After her doctorate, she was awarded with a 6-year postdoctoral scholarship at the Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (UCP), with the collaboration of Aarhus University-Denmark, related to biological treatment of domestic waters with constructed wetlands and where she also developed work in the area of green roofs. Between 2016-18 had a postdoctoral scholarship at CIIMAR, developing work with floating islands in port marinas.
