Marisa Maia research focuses on grapevine metabolomics to characterize and understand the mechanisms behind grapevine varieties susceptibility/resistance towards pathogens in order to identify metabolic biomarkers that can be used as molecular screening traits in grapevine breeding programs. Through the years she has been challenging herself by acquiring knowledge on extraction of plant metabolites, time-course infection assays with different pathogens (Plasmopara viticola and Botrytis cinerea), regulation of plant metabolism upon plant-pathogen interaction and mass spectrometry techniques [Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) for MS Imaging (MSI)]. She has been involved in 8 National and International projects and has worked in several laboratories abroad and in the country: - JKI-Julius Kühn-Institut (Germany) - MolSys - Mass Spectrometry Laboratory (Belgium) - INIAV-Pólo Dois Portos (Portugal) - LCP-A2MC (France) - RIBP- (France). Marisa Maia has presented her results in more than 42 national and international conferences, meetings, courses and seminars: 17 oral communications and 15 Panel communications (1 award for best panel communication). She was also involved in the organizing committee of 6 national and international conferences/meetings. Marisa Maia has been recognized by 10 different institutions, professional organizations and foundations in the form of fellowships to present her work (Réseau Français de Métabolomique et Fluxomique; Société française de biochimie et de biologie moléculaire; Italian Chemical Society - MS Division; COST Trainee Grant (BM1403); SPB scholarship) or to develop her work (COST STSM (FA1306); UL&Amadeu Dias Foundation). In 2022 she was recognized by the Portuguese National Commission from the International Organization of Vine and Wine (CNOIV) with the innovation award for the scientific work <Integrating metabolomics and targeted gene expression to uncover potential biomarkers of fungal/oomycetes-associated disease susceptibility in grapevine>.
