KATHRYN WHITEHEAD is a Full Professor in Microbiology at Interfaces at the Faculty of Science and Engineering in Manchester Metropolitan University (ManMet). Her research covers a diverse range of areas and the key to her work is its multidisciplinary and applied aspects. In essence, she works on the characterization of antimicrobial, antiadhesive, and biomimetic surfaces and how bacteria or bacterial and fungal spores become attached, adhered or retained on surfaces. Her work also looks at the effect of organic fouling on surface hygiene and on bacterial fouling and biofilm production. She has expertise in developing new biocidal agents and surfaces and the effect such products have on biofilm formations. During her research career, she has authored or co-authored more than 120 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, book chapters, and conference papers. She has given more than 40 oral presentations in national and international conferences and has been a Keynote speaker numerous times. She is currently a subject Editor for Food Bioproducts Processing She has been awarded funding as a PI or Co-PI from the UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership Awards, Horizon 2020, BBSRC, EPSRC, Sir Halley Stewart Trust, and the Independent Research Fund, Denmark. She has been involved in a number of collaborative projects working for partners such as Unilever, Lubrizol, Eurocell and Holchem. Her total external grant income since 2012 to ManMet is approximately £2.5M. She is a grant reviewer for a number of EU Horizon 2020 projects, New Zealand and Canadian research projects and Research Council UK Awards. She has acted on a number of occasions as a Technical Advisor on EU Horizon 2020 projects. She was previously the Membership Secretary and Treasurer of the International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation Society. She currently is supervising 10 PhD students. She has had over 20 PhD completions, one MPhil completion and numerous Masters by Research completions. She has hosted visiting researchers and Academics from Portugal, Spain, Gran Canarias, Denmark and Australia.
